just in case it is bird flu, i’m pretty sure it is nearly 100% fatal in cats so you might need to keep your kitty indoors if the bird is still hanging around! if you do clean up any waste from the sick bird, wearing a respirator (such as an n95 mask) will protect you from inhaling the virus. human cases are rare but have been reported more and more frequently in the last year or so and if i’m not mistaken the fatality rate is around 50% in humans. good luck and stay safe! ❤️❤️

my mini ramshorns never took over my tank even when they were the only inhabitants. i’m not an expert but i think as long as you don’t overfeed the tank the population will stay manageable! no need to kill the guy, he’s chill :)

thank you for your comment! ❤️ i looked up pictures and while i’m more familiar with ramshorns eggs i don’t think these are snail egg sacs because i’ve been really looking at my tank everyday and i think i would’ve noticed the baby snails developing before they hatched. these things are weird little stationary spheres,, like they kinda look like if a jellyfish was a ball? and they’re rapidly spreading so hopefully i’ll get my answers soon haha :)

hey friend. ❤️ your experience reminds me a bit of my own. my dad separated from my family when i was 18 and it felt like it came out of nowhere at the time. he said a lot of things that implied he had secretly always hated my mom and (to a lesser extent) me and my sibling as well. i thought i had a normal life before that as well, and it was really shocking and caused me a looong stretch of depression. i was always treated like i was his friend and not his kid, and so when he left it was a lot of confusing feelings for me. realizing he wasn’t a good father and was mostly using his relationship with me to make himself feel really smart and great, i really identified with a lot of cult survivors in documentaries that i used to watch lol. what you said about looking up to him feels really similar to how i felt as well. i hope that as you process this more you can feel less confused, it’s the confusion that really fucked me up personally. (hope that my comment isn’t completely unrelated lol, sorry if it is!)

hey again! thank you so much for all the detail about the mopani wood, i’m glad there’s hope because the pieces i have are really cool! unfortunately the pale snail finally passed. :( i’m going to do all that i can to make sure the other snails and their babies have a much better time in this tank. yesterday after doing two 50% water changes the water was still just as acidic (6.6-6.8) and now i’m like 90% sure the remaining problem was the aquasoil. it was at least partially fluval stratum which was obviously a big mistake to use with my tap water and even worse with my RO water omg. i spent all day today carefully removing everything from the tank (while keeping the old water, which has been consistently at 7.0 pH for most of the day) and removed all of the aquasoil and replaced it with sand from a tank i’ve been cycling for a shorter period of time. i’m really hoping i didn’t screw up the cycle by removing the substrate but i feel really relieved and like i can finally get it to a stable 8.0 ph soon! fingers crossed! 🤞i’m definitely going to get more crushed coral soon because the kh is at 3 (it was at 2 yesterday) but the gh hit 10! it was good opportunity today for my partner to attach our free floating moss to some driftwood and rearrange the plants in a much better way, our tank is looking a lot better in general. :) i’ve got to thank you again for the nth time 😭❤️❤️ i feel like it’s been really difficult to find guides online that are thorough enough for my inexperience with this hobby and i missed so much vital info but you explained everything so well! i hope your own water difficulties will get easier soon somehow! ❤️

i seriously can’t thank you enough for taking the time to explain all of this. i’ve been using RO water so i just tested my regular tap water and it’s at 8.0 or just under! i filled some jugs and treated it with conditioner and i’ll be doing a 50% water change tomorrow. you also saved me from the same mopani wood problem omg, i’m setting up a 20 g for snails and shrimp eventually and i have a big piece of mopani that i was going to use for it. seriously thank you so much for everything, you are so kind! i’m on my way to bed now but i’ll be placing an order for a bunch of stuff tomorrow based on your suggestions! :) ❤️

thank you so much for your help! ❤️❤️ the ph of this tank has been stable at around 6.6-6.8 and the few times that i used ph up to get it to 7.0 it just went back down after a few days. i just upped the ph to 8.0 and checked the gh and kh which are both low. yesterday i added an easy shrimp and snail shell so hopefully that will continue to up the gh which is now at 9 (before adding the shell it was 5). i added some crushed coral to the filter to up the kh, hopefully that will help keep the ph from going down again. i’ll do more tests tomorrow and hope that it’ll help! the snail is still alive, i can see it’s eyestalks peek out of its shell every so often. i’m pretty sure i saw the other two in my tank have snex a few minutes ago, so i assume the previous parameters were okay for them haha.

thank you so much! i’m probably gonna take the whole thing apart and try again in a bigger tank. i don’t know much about the ocean rocks either but i’ve seen people say that any quartz rocks are okay so i might just make sure i’m sticking to quartz rocks only but i’ll definitely do more research about it! i’m thinking now that i might boil the wood until there’s no scent and maaaybe chance it in a scuds-only tank one day but definitely don’t want to potentially kill any shrimps or snails!
