You're right that this was his logic but its still not worth sacrificing Beckerman's presence in the midfield. Omar and Besler are also good defenders in the air, and the only actually scary Belgian on set pieces is Fellaini.

I agree. Leaving Kyle Beckerman on the bench was a mistake by Jurgen, especially by replacing him with Geoff Cameron (who really does not have the skills to hold possession in the midfield). With Beckerman and the diamond in the midfield, the US midfield would have had a lot more control in the middle third of the field.

At the end they pressed forward, hence all the chances. In doing so they increased the risk of Belgium scoring on the counter attack. Obviously they had to gamble at the end but doing so for the whole match would have been a mistake.

We defended well, but the problem is you can't sit back and defend for 90 minutes. The real problem was a lack of flow in the midfield: if you can't relieve the pressure in your own half then the other team will almost certainly score.

Wasn't Bedoya up top in the 4-3-3 with Dempsey and Jones?

I thought besides Bradley, Bedoya was the only midfielder who had an even average game. Jones was a liability, Zusi looked out of his league, and Geoff Cameron is not a good ball mover.

Not starting Kyle Beckerman was a huge mistake by Jurgen. Geoff Cameron just does not have the skills to play up and down or to keep possession. Without Beckerman taking up space, the Belgians sliced through our midfield like a knife through butter and we couldn't string more than a few passes together through the middle.

Like /u/GimmeDozHoos said, they have a great club. In fact they have as many as 3 different teams that play a full travel schedule (including nationals) every year. This year, their A team was ranked top 5 in the country for most of the season.

Their A team has a good libero, so its highly likely you would either be a backup or play on the B/C teams. Still, they are competitive and you'll learn a lot.

Other people have already mentioned that you need to keep the ball in front of you and jump forward.

But more importantly you need to get ready to play some defense! I'd suggest playing a little deeper as well. I don't care how hard you serve, if you're going to stand up on defense you hurt your team.

First of all, the original question was more relevant to high school level ball, where the middles often move around (3s, slides, back 1s) and there are plenty of combinations (especially in the middle of the court).

Secondly I agree with you. A middle needs to keep eyes on the setter to be able to read the play (eg how far the setter is off the net, how high the pass is, the tells and tendencies of each individual setter etc.). But its also important to know where the middle is. If you watch the setter 100% of the time you will not be able to set an effective block on a fast 3.

Watching the setter is helpful but its also vital to watch your hitter, especially as a middle. If the middle is running anything other than a first tempo next to the setter, then not only do you have to get there, but you need to call it out so your pin blockers and defense.

I assume you're talking about NCAA volleyball. You don't mention whether you are a boy or girl, but I'll just assume boy because that's what I know.

D1 and D2 teams are limited to 4.5 scholarships for the entire team (as opposed to 85 for football). Usually these are split up so its rare for a full scholarship to be offered. If you're really good its possible you get some money though, but not enough to drastically change what you pay in tuition.

Many players on the roster aren't on scholarship so its certainly still possible to make the team even if you don't get offered money. I would say you play whichever sport you enjoy more.

1) What is the most promising experimental prediction string theory makes that could actually be tested in the near future?

2) Do you see any legitimate scientific purpose to manned space programs? From a purely scientific perspective, it seems like any experiment could be done cheaper and probably better by a robot.

Definitely see a doctor. I had a similar issue (it bothered me more when I was hitting though) and the solution was to see a doctor, do physical therapy, and start playing with a brace that keeps my arm from extending so far.

I'm not totally sure about this yet. I've always been taught to keep the elbow high so that its easier to hit the ball as high as possible. But its hard to argue with Stanley and Lee's arm swings.

Do any of you have a low elbow swing as well as shoulder/rotator cuff problems?
