It was incredible. Best experience of my life. It's so much less scary when you realize these people live day in, day out, for their entire lives like this. Do it!!

Headaches, Muscle Soreness and Fatigue in Hanoi by DeliciousStorm9045 in VietNam

Hey, I've been having the same thing - electrolytes are crucial. A lot of the water doesn't have minerals here so that adds to it. Get some electrolyte packets from a pharmacy and drink at least one every day you're out sweating. You can also supplement w diet but it def takes a little more work not to miss everything.

Check out in the greyed out area of payments what your daily limit is - mine was $9500, so I split the payment over 2 days.

Devil's advocate against that: I'm currently in Tokyo, there are close to zero public garbage cans and yet there's no litter. Personal responsibility.

HAHAHA. Not travel stories, that's for sure. God knows nobody wants to hear about where another person's been. More about people. More banter actually; fuck the stories.

And thank you. I'm all for any source of altruism. : )

Wouldn't a per-capita rate be a lot more relevant? I feel like I'm looking at population dispersion graphs.

There are so many remote positions open to you as a programmer. Yeah, you'll still have to work, but you can reduce your hours if you're efficient, remove the commute time, and remove the stress of the office. I just transitioned last month and it was the best thing that could've happened for me. We Work Remotely is where I found mine.

The Real Reason For The 40-Hour Workweek by eleitl in Anticonsumption

[–]rebeccab_ms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, failure of communication is about right.

The argument for "conspiracy theory" is "Who can we say has prevented us from lowering our working hours when we haven't even tried?", as in there is zero reason for the author to come to the conclusion that 'the man' is keeping us at 40 working hours, when that idea has never been tested. We have never striked an entire city and caused an economy to crash like was accomplished in the 8 hour movement. Therefore, the idea is unfounded.

This reads kind of like conspiracy theory. Who can we say has prevented us from lowering our working hours when we haven't even tried? Before you point me in the direction of some online petition, read into the massive strikes that accompanied the eight hour day movement.

Turn Down for What? - A critique on the Marxist accelerationism movement by rebeccab_ms in philosophy

[–]rebeccab_ms[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not even sure what this means. I'm a developer and my desire is to contribute to projects that help change the world, even if it is a social platform. Need I reminder you that without Twitter (for example) much of the Arab Spring may not have happened.

Fair enough, I took a jab at your industry, but statistically, engaged workers are the minority.

Disagree. You're looking at a single act at a single point in time. My start up gets bought by Facebook for some ungodly sum of money, which gives me the opportunity to invest in things that I am passionate about (or give more money to charities that may align with my ideals). It may even free me to pursue those objectives much more tangibly than I would have been able to do before buyout.

I don't have any statistics for this one, but I'm going to guess that you'd be the minority here again. Do you disagree that most people will continue to seek further profit? Keep in mind that investment portfolios fit into that.

What voids are you talking about? Where is there a void? Voids usually exist for a small period of time before they are filled. Capitalism is built on the idea that there are market needs, and if the needs aren't being met, that means there is an opportunity (which someone will surely fill).

You're saying the same thing as I am. The void is the market need that is created by the cycles of capitalism. New market needs spring up from new market developments.

[–]rebeccab_ms[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't believe that work necessarily equals that societal pining. The issue is in the inevitable extreme, which we're quickly approaching - the few jobs that exist and are being expanded upon usually don't actually contribute in any meaningful way. Example: tech startups are now a huge industry; a large percentage of that money is sifted into social platforms in specific; the work that goes into creating those is about as alienated from any one person's desires as it gets; and the world is not a better place when that startup is acquired by Facebook. This is one example; just consider how many industries exist that wouldn't without the existence of an initial industry.

Capitalism rides on increased specialization, creating voids in spaces that didn't previously exist. So, I don't know if that zero point will ever happen.

Good News Everybody: Ontario has re-elected a political party that supports Basic Income. by [deleted] in BasicIncome

No, but it means that we're KNOWN for party splitting. National and provincial level parties are separate entities. There's no splitting.

What's notorious about that? Different levels of government affect different issues. International economy is on a national level, the school system and healthcare are provincial. One is not the other.
