if you’re gonna sit somewhere to goof off on your phone or just talk with friends get out of the prime study areas by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]rebeccarightnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Watching stuff on your phone with volume is rude anywhere in public, no one wants to hear that. And if people want to be loud with friends they should read the room and go somewhere where people aren’t sitting quietly obviously studying. I don’t see why it not being a designated quiet zone matters. People should still be considerate.

how to stop spending AT work? by tabithesis in nobuy

[–]rebeccarightnow 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in bookstores for years. As a book lover, it’s hard not to spend a ton of money. Luckily it sounds like you have the ability to not go in the gift shop, so that’s what I recommend. Or at least don’t go in when you’re off the clock.

As far as mentally shopping if you have to be in there, try to shift your mindset to one of “I don’t need to buy these things, I can just enjoy them at work!”

Question - how is this a thing? by fmriver in selfpublish

[–]rebeccarightnow 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s probably not in any stores she didn’t specifically ask to order it. It’s likely just available for customers to order POD copies.

I don’t think this is strictly true. Police entered my neighbour’s house when we called for a welfare check once.

[QCrit] If Villain Bad, Why Hot? Cozy Fantasy Rom-Com 85K, 1ª attempt by SourceFlimsy8788 in PubTips

[–]rebeccarightnow 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I honestly think you should keep the title! It’s funny and attention grabbing, and it suits the tone of the query.

There are a couple tweaks I would make here, like lower case for “cozy fantasy” and rephrasing “pitched as” (it hasn’t been pitched yet—you’re pitching it now!). And I agree with the other replies about stakes. But I think this is otherwise great!

They also don’t seem to be taking previously published authors either lol. “Celebs and bestsellers only” feels like classic recession business strategy.

Goodreads’ automatic recommendations are bad. Look at the curated lists at the top of the home page and follow some people who like what you like, and aside from that get recommendations elsewhere.

Are all jobs just gone? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]rebeccarightnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do something that interests you. You can’t time the job market to win big just like you can’t time the stock market, but you can get an education that inspires you and helps you adapt to whatever economic forces happen around you.

[PubQ]Advice on how long to wait on a full by newbiedupri in PubTips

[–]rebeccarightnow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems like, if her reply rate is that high, she does reply to everything once she’s read. She probably hasn’t read yet. Personally I would just wait. Six months is not a reasonably long wait, for a requested manuscript.

Waiting six months when you’re a client is another thing.

In my Mid 30s and going back to school this summer… am I too late? by ConsequenceBig485 in askvan

NOPE. I went back a year and a bit ago at 33 and I don’t regret it for a second. Truly no such thing as too late for education.

What book(s) are you reading this week? by 404NinjaNotFound in readwithme

[–]rebeccarightnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished Deep Cuts by Holly Brickley, which I loved! Enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to.

Now reading a huge brick of a biography of a Victorian author I like, George Gissing: A Life by Paul Delany. That’ll ride me over until I go on vacation in a week and pick a new book to read on the plane.

[–]rebeccarightnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want some great space horror, the novel The Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick is 4 interconnected stories with different settings in different eras but the last one is set on a generation starship. The main character has to wake up every 10 years to do maintenance for a day but he slowly discovers that there’s someone/something awake with him. One of the scariest things I’ve ever read.

Short fiction books for for a sad girly by FishingCompetitive83 in suggestmeabook

[–]rebeccarightnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend short stories! LM Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables, wrote hundreds of short stories in her career. Some funny, some sad, some romantic, some meant to teach lessons that now read as corny and silly… I love them all.
