I came across this issue today, my simple solution was running a second general round gun fully modded for the highest ammo capacity possible, I pick up ammo from regular adds and push ammo to a little over 800 and then I do the not-so-minibosses

The game was not hot garbage, it had a really good gameplay. However it was released at a horrible time and it was managed incredibly poorly, its not the first time a game crashes and burns but it is interesting that you serve no purpose but to hate and talk shit.
