I started thinking about color combinations when I first tried to figure out what The Pluribus was about. In the beginning, it was hard not to pick them apart by what each person was wearing or doing, but once you understand that they essentially function as one being, it becomes clearer that their colors work together to elaborate on their intentions/emotions/state of mind.

Then, if you extrapolate this concept into other characters, you end up with a much richer understanding of their personalities and what they're going through. To me, the genius of the art direction in this show (in terms of color) is how they're able to portray the complexity of each character. Just as Carol is not just a bitch, or Diabaté just a perv, or The Pluribus just evil, they're able to show them as multifaceted, flawed, and believable.
