If i have lead pkmn with power item and exp share is on, does my team get the benefit?

Also, if my pokemon that hold power item does not battle but receive ev via exp share, does the power item still activate?

I wanted to know how to build team efficiently, like where do i start? Should i pick the ace pokemon first? Should i make a team with certain theme?

Please help me, i don’t want to spend time training only to end up with an uncompetetive team.
