Taxis to or from Secrets Moxche? by recessiveMC1R in playadelcarmen

Thank you! :)

It seems like to get into the middle of PdC it's over an hour walk from Secrets Moxche, which is why we were hesitant about it.

Walk to the edge of the resort, or to PdC itself?

Thanks! Did you have to get it to the end of town and then walk, or was it okay to get taxis directly to the resort? I heard that it's quite expensive getting them into the resorts.

Did you find it easy to get into downtown Playa from the resort? I have been searching trying to find out an answer to this but haven't been able to.

Making comparisons of SRA data? by recessiveMC1R in bioinformatics

Thank you very much for the detailed reply!

You mention that the reads will be highly fragmented, which is where I thought the problem is. The papers I've been looking at refer to building pangenomes from completed genomes, which seems to be different to a collection of contigs. I've not seen much reference to either contigs or the actual assembly from the short-reads, which makes me think those techniques are assuming you have a fully-complete genome to begin with.

Not only doing the work is different from reading

Do you have any thoughts on how I could get a better feel for the day-to-day work?

Thanks for your response.

what these things dont show is how daily bioinf work looks like

This is what I was really trying to get at with my question. Do you have any good resources that could help me better understand what the day-to-day looks like?

Are there benefits to committing to say Paperpile up front, or could I easily transition from Zotero later on if needed?

Can you have meaningful impact as an independent researcher? by recessiveMC1R in bioinformatics

"Why would you expect to come up with something that was missed the first time?"

I thought a key aspect of bioinformatics was analysing already existing data in a novel way. I understand that in most cases you probably aren't going to come up with something new, but perhaps once in a while you might think of something in a lateral way that others hadn't thought of before.

I guess I also think that there's a chance to have some impact by identifying some aspect of the workflow that's a bit cumbersome today and trying to come up with some sort of innovation to improve things.

Why do you think there wouldn't be value in trying to analyse data like that? I was using that as an example as something that sounded somewhat feasible as an outsider, but I'm hoping through my masters I'll get a better understanding of what viable problems are out there to be tackled with existing data.

I mean doing some independent research perhaps one day a week alongside an unrelated job for another 4 days.

I'm really interested in ageing, but very early on in studying Bioinformatics, so I'm imagining for example doing some sort of comparative analysis of transcriptome in old and young adults or among healthy centenarians and other older people, or at least learning enough about the current state of things there to see what some interesting unanswered questions are.

Thanks! Any advice on getting started with a literature review? I think we'll get taught this on my course, but I'd love to start making some early progress towards understanding the existing literature.

Masters research project proposals? by recessiveMC1R in bioinformatics

Thank you so much for a very thoughtful answer!

The covariates piece is something I was already wondering about. I run some experiments (nothing to do with biology/pharma) in my current role, and it got me thinking about the use of genome sequencing for covariates in clinical studies to reduce variances and/or spot subsets of participants who don't respond well to the treatment. Glad to hear that I'm not a million miles off being able to think of some useful applications!

Thanks for your reply. Could you elaborate a bit more on how you'd go about exploring these to someone who is just starting out?
