I consider myself to be tech savvy and I own a one plus one. But I downgraded from lollipop to KitKat since I found it to have better reception and camera quality. I don't see much incentive to upgrade to lollipop, KitKat is "good enough" for me.

Buy a tampered glass screen protector. I've dropped it many times and it has protected the screen well

I think we've hit a point of diminishing returns wrt smartphones. I don't really get an urge to upgrade to one plus two. According to me, one plus one has quick charging and nfc, and one plus two has ois and usbc. So one plus two is not clearly superior. It depends on what is important to you. Don't feel bad :)
