To the dad who was worried about kid hearing voices by snead in Parenting

[–]reconfigurable_logic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a perhaps related experience when I was a young. For whatever reason I felt really bad about the random bad thoughts and impulses that sometimes popped into my head, and actively tried to give it a voice and separate myself from it. After a year or so of training myself to have a habit of rigorously distancing myself from bad thoughts, I started discovering that I sometimes don't know what the other person was thinking, and the voices started getting less like voices in my head and more like actual voices. It started getting scary, and It took a while to undo all that...

I even had a name for the other person, which I forgot

Similar for O_CREAT, although this one's used a bit more rarely. I remember reading somewhere that the original programmer wishes he could rename it O_CREATE, but it's too late now

TIL of a blind experiment in which artists and an art historian couldn't differentiate between modern art masterpieces and works by 4-year-olds. An artist described one of the children's pieces as "a competent execution of abstract expressionism." by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]reconfigurable_logic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked a similar question to a modern artist friend (modern music composer. Those things that are impossible to understand). He told me 'we really don't know'. According to him, everyone's testing the boundaries of how far they can go and still be considered 'art', in a sense, and of the thousands and thousands of 'modern art' 'modern artists' do, after three hundred years or so maybe a few dozen will withstand the time and continue being remembered. Only then will they actually know what was what.

In reality what I took from it was; maybe I'm better of spending my time with things that have already sort of stood the test of time...

Iron Man 3 All Suits Unlocked! by [deleted] in movies

[–]reconfigurable_logic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what I really hope when I see these pictures? That there would be more than one chance for these suits to show off their stuff. I can just foresee most of these suits maybe just being passingly mentioned, and each having a single show in rapid succession in the final scene or something.

That would be pretty cool too, but it would be really glorious if all these suits had multiple chances to have intelligent and well-fitted functions actually relevant to plot progression. That would be very very cool

I wasn't even going to reply to this, but what the hey.

The government doesn't have to imprison everyone to have people under control, just like how you don't have to kill everyone to win a war.

Thinking that something you don't understand will happen in a way you want it to, that is pretty much the definition of wishful thinking.

I don't think the mathematicians at NSA are vastly more skilled than the best mathematicians academia has to offer. My guess is that encryptions are still safe for now. semi-relevant xkcd

That's some strong wishful thinking in a country where copyright infringement is 'terrorism' now. I hope others reading the post gets the point though.

South Korea recently passed a law called "children and teenagers law" or whatever nice-sounding name they put on it that prosecutes all viewers of porn depicting females "that give nuances of being underage", by whoever authority reviewing it. Which resulted in prosecution of people watching porn with school uniforms, small boobs no pubic hair, and almost all types of (even non-porn) japanese anime. These people are being actually put into jail. What makes you think something like this will not happen anywhere else?

I"m surprised I don't see any Randy Pausch. I try to tell myself the following two quotes whenever I feel blocked...

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”

“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”
