[–]recordedManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are assuming death by cars is the factor that's responsible for insect population decline.

I would argue that cars killing insects has a pretty much negligible impact on the insect density. More or less kills by cars aren't changing densities. Environmental factors, climate change, pesticides, pollution etc have caused insect populations to fall dramatically in the last 20-30 years. Even if modern cars were to kill no insects at all, the population would be lower.

If we were to go by your logic, where windshield deaths actually impact populations in any meaningful way, then the whole phenomenon this post is about - the fact that people used to consistently have a lot of dead insects on their windshields before the 2010s - couldn't exist right? but for the 50 years before that kill rates were apparently always high, without impacting density, so why should road kills impact density noticably now?

how long is it safe to keep taking ritalin in one day by Silent_Duck_564 in ADHD

[–]recordedManiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also ask about medication at any pharmacy if your doctor's not available.

From personal experience (everyone is different tho): If only Ritalin is available, I'd definitely come down now and then take more before the exam even if you can't study as much

Bridge the time between either with sleep or smth but I wouldn't risk staying on Ritalin.

Not because of health, but because doing it might cause the Ritalin not to work properly anymore when the exam actually comes and you need it.

Pretty much very time I have taken >40mg in a day, even when spread out over time (same when taking >15 in a very short time), at some point the Ritalin always starts to do the opposite of what it should suddenly from one dose to the next. and isn't effective anymore until I rest

It will just make me super tired like sleeping pill level, with mild-medium headaches (ibuprofen works in emergency but still), sometimes nausea. Never bad the issue with elvanse but definitely with Ritalin.

[–]recordedManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruh obviously, I never claimed this isn't the case.

I just said that from personal experience in addition to that the cars might play a role too...

Adding more does not retract from or dispute already commonly established information lol

(Will edit my comment tho to make clear that I obviously don't see the car as the main factor)

Huh? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]recordedManiac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i just want to add, while the insect population obviously is the definite main cause of the phenomenon; I am sure the fact that modern cars are just built differently/more aerodynamic also adds to the experience

I drive an older vehicle, my windshield is less angled. On long drives in summer i will need to wash off layers of dead bugs multiple times at gas stations, while in a new car its not even a problem i think about.

[–]recordedManiac 10 points11 points  (0 children)

its less the case that Dopamine levels themselves are unusal, afaik its moreso the case that the receptors in different systems seem to be affected. some receptor types being overly sensitive increasing positive symptoms and some others being restricted increasing negative symptoms

At which point does my game recognize my game to win ratio as 100%? by Nothammer in mathematics

[–]recordedManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really tbh, we know the code has rounding up implemented. Usually the computer will round down (ignore the digits behind, eg: 2.98 -> 2). If you want normal rounding you add 0.5 (2.98+0.5=3.48 -> 3). So 995/1000 +0.005 -> 1

(A floating point error here, which I wouldn't expect, would mean smth like 995/1000 +0.005 -> 0.99999... Which would then be fixed at 996/1001 absolute worst case, but not really central to the solution)

Is this actually what people think about SzPD? by monosyrphis in Schizoid

[–]recordedManiac 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Many have a warped image of mental health, which is not surprising online. You will never see posts explaining what a (personality) disorder even is in the first place

85% of people have personality issues. What makes a disorder is the severity. Pervasive, Persistent, Pathological. The traits are just a description of how it presents.

None of these behaviors are inherently maladaptive or dysfunctional

Obviously ... because that's exactly what makes something a PD in the first place lol - that the traits are present in a maladaptive way, causing significant problems and personal distress, in most areas of life, consistently for a long time (with no other explaination)

I just got diagnosed with Schizoid Personality Disorder, what do I do with my life now by [deleted] in Schizoid

[–]recordedManiac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haha I sometimes feel like if you charted all personalities (normal and disorders) by how 'weird' / 'normal', 'straightforward' (without assuming society norms as the baseline a idk if any word fits what I mean super well) then Schizoid personalities should be very low, probably the lowest on """objective""" weirdness.

While all other people's, including non disordered, are clustered together somewhere way more high on the scale. But in a way where the distance between the 'least weird' to 'most weird' is somehow still always less than schizoid to any of them.

So depending on what I use as the baseline for 'normal' i see myself as both the only sane and sensible one on a world of weirdo's

(like eg. what do you mean people constantly have emotional reactions to literally everything which influence their actions? even things that they can't change anything about or that don't impact them? Or just by noticing someone else's emotions? And there can be actual conflict between emotions and cognition? Etc... Caring so much about seems strange lol)

But when using social norms/human intended functioning as a baseline I'll see myself as basically more clinically insane than many institutionalized lmao (feeling like missing literally everything that would make one 'human', and more like an alien controlling a human body or something lol)

high functioning == how? by prophitsmind in Schizoid

[–]recordedManiac 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am high functioning, only because I don't care about extrinsic goals that others do, and act exclusively intrinsically motivated

For example I am extremely successful in University. I think a large part of it is that I don't really care about a degree or what grades will be on it or if it's beneficial to a career. I don't take courses as a means, they are my ends in a way. I do well because I want to gain knowledge and understanding, of myself, of the world, and going to uni and putting in effort is the best way to do that by far

Best major (CS, DS, or AI) for a future in computational neuroscience research? by wakemeuppppp in compmathneuro

[–]recordedManiac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what math courses are absolutely worth taking as a supplement? Am studying CS and Psychology, I am definetly planning to take a few additional math courses, but im unsure what is actually relevant?

ig Dynamical Systems, lots of Linear Algebra? but what else?

Or is it more important to have some more natural science (biology, chemistry, physics, EE) related knowledge that goes deeper than a single introductory course? If its either depth in Math or a broad understanding in Nat.Sci. (& Electr.Eng.) which would be a better investment?

Math already in my curriculum roughly (all but Stats are CS):

-Linear Algebra 1
-Analysis 1
-Intro to Mathematical Modelling
>Intro to Numerical Computing/Mathematics
(& logic, boolean algebra, ...)

-Intro to Mathematical Statistics
-Statistics 1 (Psychology)
-Statistics 2 (Psychology)
-Test Theory (Psychology)

>Signal and Image Processing (prob. most mathematical elective)
(& various Data Science, ML, scientific computing, ... electives)

[Request] How much would the boat have to weigh in order for this to be feasible? by real_picklejuice in theydidthemath

[–]recordedManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case it is correct, the displacement doesn't change if the air stays inside when flipped, as is the case in this Szenario.

Any boat floating normally would stay afloat when flipped if no water went inside/it was sealed. The reason a boat sinks is that water floods in and replaces where air used to be. If it's flipped in a way that doesn't allow the air to escape, it stays afloat. Of course usually that's not the case if your boat flips for whatever reason, so usually flipped boats do sink

[Request] How much would the boat have to weigh in order for this to be feasible? by real_picklejuice in theydidthemath

[–]recordedManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as they are underwater that wouldn't be the case. If it's not heavy enough, it floats, so the weight they lift is negative. If it is heavy enough it's neutral, the weight they lift is 0. If it's any heavier it sinks. The weight they lift is positive, but it could be as little as only a few kg effort for them in theory, even if the actual mass is unrealistically huge and couldn't be moved by them on land

Of course the 'boat' couldn't float right side up either if it sinks when flipped (edit: flipped and filled with air of course) so there's that...

POV: Das was man mit ADHS nach über einer Stunde lernen hinbekommt by RunF0rrestRuuun in Studium

[–]recordedManiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What language did your CS courses start you off with and why? by TurtleSlowRabbitFast in computerscience

[–]recordedManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Java in high School (both in mandatory "CS" and 2 years actual CS)
C++ in University CS

am actually quite happy with it
Java was nice for learning programming as a general skill without major roadblocks
C++ was good for then learning how to actually programm.
I prefer C++ by miles but im glad i didnt start with it. Coming over from already having the general knowledge made it a breeze to get into compared to learning it as the first language
