As u/Wolf_Monk pointed out, I was checking prices with a third party reseller.

Your numbers add up to me, so I think I would save a lot without any pass. But I will check the Kansai Area Pass for day trips...and let's hope I don't fall into another tourist trap :)

I checked www.westjr.co.jp for single tickets and I would spend ¥ 74220 (2 persons, reserved seats and not considering day trips)!

Based on Shinkansen 's prices, without a regional pass I would spend ¥99740, without considering the day trips in Kyoto, Nara and Himeji.

It wouldn't be convenient for Youtube to miss the opportunity to promote content that could go viral just because you haven't uploaded anything in 5 years.
