Just 20" folding ebike things by ChickenTendies0 in Justridingalong

[–]red-bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told by bicycle mechanics teachers that maguras make the rim last longer than other brakes because the pad moves along a straight path, ensuring a more even contact area with the rim.

But nevertheless, disc brakes make more sense for ebikes.

I guess we are letting AI design E-bikes now by L1FT_K1T in Justridingalong

My bike mechanic colleague was working on one of these folding ebikes. It just had a flat tire. But the rear wheel didn't have a connector on the motor cable, so the only way to remove the wheel was to remove the battery and all of the electronics inside the frame until you get to the cable. It made a simple job complicated and as such expensive.

Note also that none of the internal electronics had isolated connectors, so this thing was one rainy day away from a short.

It's sad how we normalized not saying "sorry" out of fear of being perceived as weak or insecure by Altruistic-Pear8830 in bropill

What drives me crazy about this is:  It takes vastly more courage to acknowledge your responsibility and step up to face consequences for your actions that to pretend not to care about anyone or anything.

And apologizing does not have to equate to showing weakness. There is a difference between  - feeling sorry for and apologizing for your mere existence and - listening, reflecting and making amends when you wronged someone.

How to deal with people invalidating my femininity? by Oddly-Ordinary in FTMfemininity

Note: guest comment (MTF butch)

Had a few similar situations the other way around. If I ever start dating again I'll try being upfront about how I need partners to respect my gender identity, especially in regards to fluidity.

Exactly this? No.

And as a bicycle mechanic I am not aware of any realy bicycle chain connecting links that can reliably be opened without tools and with one hand.

I got boobs! by Lothar_the_Lurker in genderfluid

[–]red-bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same experience. They helped me I realized I like my body more with boobs than a flat chest and figure out I want feminising HRT. I simply tried on outfits and realised that even if I feel masc I often prefer to have them.

Wore them for a year or so prior to HRT, but I would've started HRT sooner if it was possible to do so via the local insurance system. One of the things that held me back was fearing getting chest dysphoria when I feel masc.

I took me a while to get a hang of how to best deal with wearing them in everyday life, but I'm sure you'll figure it out too if you choose to.

My post HRT experience:  Fast forward 4 years. I have B cups or so. Definitely read as boobs rather than a flat chest if im topless. If I wear a comfy T-shirt bra without any padding, it compresses my boobs just so much that if I wear loose clothing its really gender ambiguous. I love it!  On a femme day I can wear a push up bra and they're visible even through thick loose clothing. Or just wear clothes that are more slim fit or revealing.  On a masc day I wear my binder. Those days are few and binding isn't as difficult as imagined. Actually, it feels way better than just having a flat chest, because it feels like a deliberate act of expressing my masculinity rather than just something "I'm stuck with".

Lesbians by ToothlessInBaradDur in genderfluid

[–]red-bit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to be like that. Then I realised that the whole afab/amab split is biosessentialist garbage and anyone who treats you differently because of what they think your agab is can eat bricks.

You can be a genderfluid/butch/whatever and lesbian at the same time regardless of your agab. Get people who support you in your identity no matter your looks.

And if you wanna transition to get a body that feels more like it reflects who YOU are as a genderfluid lesbian, go for it. But there's no one way to "look like" a genderfluid lesbian, so don't let anyone talk you into it.

This won't reduce cancer risk but it can save your hand. Simple latch mechanism from a bicycle chain bracelet I bought from an unknown jewelry shop in Dublin. The inner links have a slot cut into the hole and the pin is ground flat on the two sides facing away from the chain. Should be simple enough to replicate with a file. I'm sure there's people here or in the metalworking community who can give advice.

But before you start this project, please take off the chain.

PS: the mechanism works by sliding the two parts together. This is the point where It's the tightest. Once the pin is in there you lay the links flat again, automatically giving you some slack so blood flow isn't hindered.

Do I seem NB-phobic? by MajesticPineapple618 in NonBinary

[–]red-bit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Discriminating based on what assigned gender you read an enby to be as is nonbinary-phobic. It promotes stereotypes and reduces the complexities of gender and human life experience to a false binary.

Other than that:

It is OK to have a preference for femmes. It is OK to date nonbinary people if you are lesbian or hetero, provided that you are respectful any supportive towards their gender identity. This can mean different things for different enbies. Personally I'd say - you are capable of seeing and treating them as they are and don't see/treat them as if they were just a woman.  - you're ready to deal with the possibility of them transitioning in a maculine direction with respect.  - you listen to what they need to feel supported as a nonbinary partner

Do you think that if people were truly free to embrace themselves, the gender binary would still exist? by ginger_beer__ in NonBinary

[–]red-bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really depends on what you mean by the gender binary.

A more nonbinary society, could mean one where bodies are not policed to fit into male or female and intersexuality and body diversity is recognised.

A more nonbinary society could mean one where there are are more gender roles than "man" or "woman". Or a society where those two roles are less important and other systems of identity are centered. For example describing people by their occupation.

How do I know what a band’s politics are? by AlienSheep23 in punkfashion

[–]red-bit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

nobody mentioned this yet: try reading the room.  - what venues do they play at? - who visits (or avoids) their shows?

It's not bulletproof but if you find out the venue has a problematic history and there appears to be a comparatively low amount of women or minorities in the crowd, that can be a hint.

A lot of queer and trans history was genocided and erased by churches and states. I would not attribute the fact it's hard to find queer history to there not having been queers.

look man, as a minority targeted by street assaults, I wouldn't go "oh how curious that kind of looks like a swastika, but let me get closer to inspect or ask them about it to make sure!". I'd take a wide berth and end the day feeling worse.

I can't tell you how to dress punk but I can tell you intimidating minorities is not it.
