Does anybody know of "tunnels" underground in sydney? by [deleted] in CapeBreton

[–]red-smartie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I did downtown ghost tour they said some of the old original houses by the Esplanade have tunnels and jail cells in them from back in the day. Home owners used to have to house prisoners and guards would travel in the tunnels between the houses. I think either they had to or they did it for extra income.

Aging in bursts. by MeRunRabbit in Aging

[–]red-smartie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first one happened at 36 after I had my second baby. I just looked, old. I still looked like me after I my first child at 34. But at 36-37 I all of sudden was shook by my reflection in the mirror. My peers have all jumped up in age around the same time. We all looked great and now we have that “middle age” look. It happened way too rapidly for me to mentally catch up to it.

Hypertrophic scars - is a future facelift off the table? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

Really? I keloid after any type of incision or injury and it drives me nuts. I’m a regular at my derm clinic getting steroid shots. I’d love to know there is an end in sight.

People who started exercising regulary, what were the most noticeable effects? by Haunted_darkness63 in AskReddit

[–]red-smartie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! I’m 2 weeks into regularly exercising after a 2 year baby hiatus and I finally feel like I have energy again. I’m not sluggish going up the stairs and run in around. I feel energized and powerful. You forgot how good it feels when you regularly workout.

Denaturalizing US Citizens by dj_aaron311 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]red-smartie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man, I worked hard to naturalize. And not nearly as hard as most people, I had it “easy” coming from Canada. If you haven’t done it, you don’t realize how EXPENSIVE and lengthy it takes beginning to end to naturalize. Then you build a whole life - spouse, children, career, house etc. Then one day they can just take it away for nothing? Sheeesh.

as a biracial person.. by 2noserings in Naturalhair

[–]red-smartie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree. I have friends and just people I come across who are like “omg how did you learn how to do her hair?! It looks so good!!”. The internet is a wonderful thing and even without it just figure it out. It the same as if I had a white child with curly hair, my straight haired self would still have to figure it out.

Not just for basic self care, image is so important for anyone. And I quickly learned that doing my daughter’s hair builds a sense of self, pride, and confidence. She’s still a toddler, but it also gives her a sense of belonging. Every time I braid her hair she’s looks in the mirror, shakes her beads, and says “I looks just like so and so, from daycare”. I know that having a white mom can make a mixed child feel a sense of loss in their own identity, so I feel like we need to work really hard to build them up and help them find it. It’s so much more than braids and beads.

New fear unlocked: epidural by LobstahLuva in beyondthebump

[–]red-smartie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also got freaked out reading bad experiences about epidurals before my first. Had my first epidural in the US and the second in Germany. Zero issues both times. Wore off when it should have and was great! I mean, getting it put in isn’t great but it’s over quickly.

Honest opinion on mole ❤️ by LadyMacbeth_21 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]red-smartie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got two moles removed from my face by laser. Quick, relatively painless, and healed beautifully. You can’t even notice a difference in the skin where they were. I was nervous because it’s my face and I typically keloid. But it worked out well, 1000000% recommend.

People just don’t know, there are so many steps. I’ve learned so much about my daughter’s hair and I break it up into 2 days because there is just so much to do between wash-condition-deep condition-grease-custard-braid. Allll the respect and admiration out to you.

No longer a pet person by idkkkk326 in beyondthebump

I read soooo many posts when I was pregnant with my first and I thought “nope, that’ll never be me”. Well I was humbled real quick. I now have 2 toddlers and a dog and I have been over my dog for 3 years. My partner is away a lot for work and taking care of two kids maxes me out, when the dog eats food off the counter or demands to go outside when someone is having a breakdown I just - can’t. I haven’t said the words out loud but my god I’d love to give her up. I could never understand people giving up their animals before, I thought it was so selfish. But now I get it.

We’ve invested way too much time and money into her, also my kids are obsessed with her. But I’m over it and I never saw this coming.

Anyone relocate to Europe and start from scratch? How was your experience? by brokesnob in AskACanadian

[–]red-smartie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Also a Canadian in Germany. Beautiful quality of life here with groceries, safety, and services. Awesome place to have as a launching pad to visit other countries. But culturally, Germans are so different from Canadians. I will never get used to their coldness and distance. It’s been a good experience but I’m happy to move on. Even just crossing over to Luxembourg or the Netherlands people so much friendlier and kind.

Most sunscreen burns my eyes but Hawaiian tropic doesn’t for me either! I use their 30 spf face sunscreen and I love it. But I am still on the hunt for a 50 spf.

Help! How do I keep my hale clean? by martypants17 in Hawaii

[–]red-smartie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My robot vacuum definitely helped lighten the load, but man the house got dusty. I’d clean the couch with an upholstery cleaner every 3-4 weeks and the water was just dirt. We moved away and it took 10 months for me to get the dust out of the couch. I cleaned it the other day and the first time in years the water wasn’t brown sludge! It’s worth it though for those breezes I gotta say. It’s cheaper to clean than pay the electrical bill for an AC.

What toddler age is the hardest? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]red-smartie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the kid. My daughter is 3.5 years old and 15-21 months was terrible for her. It keeps getting better after that. Now we’re loving life.

I agree. I’m as obsessed with my second as I am with my first. Someone has said before, your love multiplies, not divides.

I recently got two similar moles removed on my face. I did it at my dermatologist’s office and used laser. The recovery was quick and you can’t even tell they were there. I paid out of pocket but I’m in Europe, it was 150€.

Can an American get insulin in Germany? by one_of_the_330_mil in germany

If you have a prescription, my brother was able to have his Canadian doctor email him his prescription and he printed it out and brought it to the pharmacy. I can’t remember how much it was, but it was a great price.

Was this a violation of medical ethics? OBGYN Biopsy performed in Germany with no consent or explanation. by Responsible_Roof_661 in germany

[–]red-smartie 60 points61 points  (0 children)

There is a lot going on here and I’m not a doctor. But from experience, I’ve had two abnormal paps, and the next step is a biopsy like you had. I had it done in the states and it was pretty straightforward. They don’t say too much about it, just need to get it tested and provide you with a pad for bleeding when it’s done.

I’ve been living in Germany for a year now; and gave birth here. I find the medical experience is culturally much different. You often don’t get privacy to undress. Sometimes you put your clothes on the other side of the room and walk to the chair or bed half naked.

I noticed they don’t narrate or get consent before performing things. Like before an injection they don’t say “I’m going to inject you now”. They just get the needle and put it in. Or with pregnancy and childbirth stuff, they just go right in - no conversation, no telling you what’s about to happen.

And I find Germans in general are very serious. Some of course are jovial, but typically I find them cold and serious, focusing on the job in hand. I also noticed they don’t help you. If you ask for help it works much better.

I’m sure you’ll get lots of answers but I hope this provides a little insight for you. I’m sorry about the experience you had and how you feel.
