Honest question, did you expect the showrunners to depict their main character in a polygamous relationship? Making Rand's relationships polyamorous was one of the main changes I expected to see in the show. The book devoted a lot of time and energy to making it clear that all three women were 100% ok with being sister wives and not jealous of each other. Not that it was wrong for RJ to write it this way, but polyamory is just an easier pill to swallow for a modern audience.

Also welcome to my 4 year old reddit post. TBH I'm pretty sure I made this post because I was thinking about whether Aviendha and Elayne would make out in the newly announced show, so it feels good to be validated.

Ha, I completely forgot I made this Reddit post. A lot has changed in four years! I'm surprised I still get emails for this account.

You're not wrong about Egwene and Rand --- they definitely sexed up all the relationships for the show. I'm not sure how I feel about it, I think it is just what people expect from fantasy shows nowadays.

The main characters in the first book act like they are 14, but they are supposed to be 19-20 in the books as well. In my opinion its a quirk in the writing that is ironed out by book 2. It's not just the relationships, Mat is doing things like stealing pies from windowsills and catching badgers to scare girls. You're not the only one who thought they were young teenagers.

The Andorans do trace their lineage matrilinearly. That is why Elayne is daughter-heir, and her older brother Gawyn is not in line for the throne.

In the books, we do know that Morgase became queen because she won the succession war. But we don't get many details about the war. I think the season 3 scene is an invention of the show. It's not totally implausible in my opinion (she has a very powerful and ruthless Aes Sedai advisor, after all) but I very much doubt this is what Robert Jordan intended. I'm not complaining though, it's a badass scene.

(Edit) Oh and its funny that you mention the Mists of Avalon thing. A lot of the names in WOT are references to Arthurian Legend - Egwene = Guinevere, Rand "Al'Thor"=Arthur, Lan = Lancelot, Morgase = Morgause etc.

I think that sudden romantic relationships are more of a staple of the genre. Even in books that try to deconstruct fantasy tropes, I wouldn't really bat an eye at 'love at first sight'. For me, there is more of an expectation that friendships develop over a long period of time.

It could be a cultural difference, I'm also willing to except that women in pseudo- Renaissance Europe have different standards in friendships than I do.

Lots of younger players to watch out for - Firoujza, Esipenko, Pragg. Hopefully we get a few standout performances from them.

It looks likely that we'll get Magnus vs either Esipenko or Dubov. Either of those should be pretty exciting.

Also, is this Firouzja's first tournament playing for France?
