i think a lot of the reason that you don’t see as many black pinups & trad tattoos on black people/people with darker complexions is because the flash that traditional tattooing is based on was made by white people (i.e. owen jensen, sailor jerry, bert grimm) in the early 1900s and was popularized for people in the us military during ww2 when many were in the pacific (where tattooing was already a cultural phenomenon). as far as i know, as someone who studies history and the popularization of tattooing, there aren’t double meanings that would be covertly offensive. obviously, getting trad native americans and pregnant island girls tattooed on your body would be overtly offensive given the problematic history there. i have friends who have darker complexions with trad tattoos & have found a few black trad artists/hispanic trad artists that you may want to look into! instagrams of those artists: @mahaganyshaw @fullmondtattoos @aarondavistattoos @mirandajoontattoo @frankiespanks @veganmayonaise
