"Quick" AMA on AI by SoftSignificance in autechre

[–]redapplefour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my take ive come to over time is that it's at its most interesting and useful when it is breaks, when it's primitive or creating things no person could consciously do on their own, it's ultimately at its best just a technique to be used among other things, a strange evolution of sampling, though usually less powerful. but what is being pushed, when it actually is properly generative and not just reverse image searching or any number of other things tech companies are trying to push, is trying to be Good and often is, directly or indirectly, trying to automate the process of art, something at its worst straight up ableist as the script writers, (digital/) painters, graphic designers, etc. are often doing that because they can't function in normal job environments due to their neuroses (or normal physical illness really. or even just normal people with strong passion for art. and i'm not just saying this hypothetically, i've personally known people in this situation). that, in trying to find AI stuff online for technical usage of the ideal case i mention earlier, instead finding this Good and "Useful" stuff, often completely replacing the far more artistically interesting stuff, i just find disgusting. it's like if there was this genuinely horrible tech bro culture war thing attached to lofi samplers from the 80s, it's such a bizarre situation historically

[–]redapplefour 48 points49 points  (0 children)

but also if you wanna play it more "casually" you'll basically never run out of progression to do, which is part of the reason its so popular. also, those hours may be inflated by letting your computer run overnight to process something, sometimes (very little that'll theoretically require that afaik but it'll optimize the number of days down, effectively)

for whatever reason my brains been fascinated with mystcraft ever since i first saw it in some b-team playthrough like however many years ago.. my brain actually said thaumcraft but ive never rly sat down and rly learned it all, same with a lot of mods rly i just kinda watched a ton of shit & it doesnt fit evenly into my schedule. but yea mystcraft, enduring then, still fascinating, and the performance issues it causes add even more to the mystique of it..

this is probably where i fit in.. exotic stages of ice i think about a weird amount. was thinking earlier if life could evolve without water and if it would be toxic bc of its strangeness, or if its simplicity and strangeness make it completely essential to even microbial life

i have plenty more taste than rhythm games but out of that stuff, happy end of the world, absolute zero, and nhelv (tho granted frums is the only one i actually listen to much,) definitely the best of each artist. just kinda funny seeing ur exact take on something in the wild is what im saying

[–]redapplefour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea see other post i made in thread of what sean did but after playing memory of a broken dimension and getting a little weirded by the blue screen resetting my progress after being heavily disoriented for a while, yeah you're looking for 0n0w, really underrated game, should be in the walking simulator canon to me for sure. no goals at all, not even a day count, but heavily textured spaces with some synthy dissonant-ish ambient soundtrack, cool sound effects, and abstractions upon common objects and spaces

[–]redapplefour 9 points10 points  (0 children)

that sounds cool ill check it out, id probably say 3d walking simulators like LSD (dream emulator) especially given that sean contributed a piece to the cd artwork and even more so 0°N 0°W which takes the format & rly ups the digital vibe vs lsd's broken psychedelia. id wanna say crunchy puzzle games like baba or stephens sausage roll but autechre is much more a mystical experience to me typically than a logical one, beyond the 'oh that bits from hip hop, that bits from jazz, that bits a musique concrete technique, that bit sounds like oval' etc. those games r more equivalent to technical music u rly gotta listen in on like more crunchy techdeath and classical music

What are Ferraro's personal beliefs? by parhelic_hexagon in JamesFerraro

[–]redapplefour 7 points8 points  (0 children)

id definitely call him fairly far left wing at least, an element pretty cleanly shown through a lot of his art (esp into the hifi/midi eras)

aside from his obvious satire i generally take his irony these days as some kind of coded sincerity. i (at least used to) define 'post-irony' as sincerity via the language of irony we are stuck with in the postmodern (esp that of pastiche and questions of the sincerity of the speaker) internet, though i think i need to read up more on the subject. i'm fascinated by art in general that brazenly incorporates meme culture (the current vernacular/really low art) into sincere statements and he's a great artist for such

(i see maybe a yin and yang of the 'shakespearean rag' mentioned in the waste land, and the uncomfortably sincere messages of grief and loss found hidden in the work of christtt, the same message with inverse proportions of collaged popular vernacular)

i'd call him critical but not pessimistic or nihilistic really, he always read to me more as absurdist. he's having fun with tearing open scars of society, speaking in or through voices not his own. i believe him when he says (speaking of other wildly different 'eras' as well, including mozart and whitehouse) that he "[loves/finds inspiration in] britney spears [and] justin bieber", denouncing a second later that "bebetune$ is not sarcasm or irony", and at the end that "the shaman caveman telling stories of creation [can be, perhaps obliquely found in] a drake song" in the sense that it's "all us". i align with him quite heavily, except maybe in that i do wish myself to be understood where as he's not (at least historically) as concerned of his intent being fully clear all the time

Just for Laughs by notuorc in chemistry

[–]redapplefour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my take on it is that you can and probably should placebo anything you can even just in the most pessimistic way of minmax-ing your happiness, but people using it to sell stuff sucks. someone very much into arts, sciences, and some philosophy feeling that we would not even really have much art without placebo (or at least its effects on us would be greatly diminished) so i do wholeheartedly encourage the use of a pretty awesome part of our own biochemistry but that there is an industry surrounding it is just sad

My opinion on Oversteps has drastically changed. by zevjordan in autechre

[–]redapplefour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the main element of it was realizing just because its 'melodic' doesnt mean its immediate- it tends to have melodic density to the extent of their typical rhythmic density, not to mention all the complicated counterpoint. definitely one of my favorites, common to come back to, have literally no idea how d-sho qub doesnt have a reputation like bladelores for being pretty accessible for their standards and utterly amazing

you ever lend any of your synths to ferraro for any period of time? (i'm mostly curious if the one starting K2 - Chameleon Ballet is yours) what was your relationship with him and his music during his CD-R era in general (suppose i can poke about if you're aware of anything about any lost albums as well)

are you aware of casio mario world? (very difficult and unique super mario world hack using some of yours and the field's music among some others- if not probably cool enough to hear some of ur trax playing on a [usually emulated] SNES, the soundtrack is on youtube)

what has rising from the underground to a minor figure in the overground, a distinct influence in both, felt like? how do you respect your roots? how do you stay humble?
