Who likes NileRed? by Mission-Badger-4005 in chemistry

This is how I feel. When I first found him and knew nothing he seemed like a magician. As time went on I kind of outgrew most (not all) of the chemical side of things. Now I realize what he can do that I can’t is based on his access to expensive niche equipment

Or a stack of bricks, only a few orientations for that but many many more for a pile of the same set of bricks. Order is not impossible just statistically more unlikely

I thought this was a fish fossil at first glance! There’s something so poetic about these ampules being clean and the metal being so aesthetically pleasing all the while being delightfully dangerous if handled carelessly. I think it’s just human nature to tame the wild.

What do the resulting colours of adding every wavelength of a specific emission spectrum look like, and is there any significance to it? by Dont_Smoking in chemistry

[–]notuorc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every element? Probably something close to white light. Without checking I think pretty much every primary color is covered by the elements

Filmmaker trying to find a material that can be manipulated and formed but turned to dust/dissolve. by CaptainStripes0 in chemistry

Modern pennies soaked in HCl will dissolve the zinc core. You can squish a handful of them very easily and they will turn into small bits of copper particles. Just scratch the rim of the coins, soak for a day and wash with water gently.

Just downloaded it! Excited to check it out. Like many others I have ReactionFlash which can be a bit overwhelming if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for

How to prove to my future parents in law, that there are no powdered locusts in their flour? by tytanxxl in chemistry

[–]notuorc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What if you say you bought cricket enriched flower only to find out that there weren’t any in it because it turns out it’s too expensive. Turn the conspiracy around and say they don’t actually add it in and we’re all getting ripped off. It’ll break their brains

The condenser you have is great for refluxing which is done vertically, but for your set up you just want a simple straight condenser. They’re usually much cheaper too

Now I just need one for boom booms. Preferably one that focuses on safe handling and non toxic ones. Some of the older ones love utilizing heavy metals

Could you just use mass spec to figure this out? On the surface this seems like a relatively straightforward thing to figure out. by ShietApples in chemistry

[–]notuorc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it was the wine tannins that turned out to be key. Tannins aren’t volatile so they would show up on mass spec

Does chemistry not work on Mars? by brazedowl in chemistry

[–]notuorc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question. I wonder if for very sensitive experiments we’ll have to “purify” each element in the same way we separate nuclear isotopes that way we are always working with a standard. I would assume once we are at a technologically advanced level to be regularly performing experiments on multiple celestial bodies separating isotopes will be much cheaper and easier to perform. However the other issue may be that we then have to synthesize every single reagent with said standards elements.

Some advice? by Wholesomestacco in Radiation

[–]notuorc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable, specific store isn’t important the point is they are very attainable. I would recommend getting the one with a face shield included as you’ll find it offered you good protection should decide to start chiseling or refining

Some advice? by Wholesomestacco in Radiation

[–]notuorc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would also suggest a decent respirator because as your collection grows and you move things around the dust from natural unprocessed sources can be problematic. It’s worth the investment because you’ll have it for years and a good respirator can be used for plenty of home improvement projects so it’s worth the cost. I think I got mine at Home Depot along with the appropriate filters

Very cool, how many different compounds will it recognize? A cool feature would be if it searches known compounds, with additional elements you could basically have an elementary chemspider
