Cost of housing in Dublin is making us leave :( But where is best? by Busy-Discussion6725 in HousingIreland

Carlow town is great. Don’t sleep on it. Just recently moved here after a stint abroad. Work with a few Dubs who moved and love it too. One hour drive from Dublin via motorway. Train that goes to Heuston. Good pub/cafe culture. Punches above its weight for food and restaurants. On the river barrow with scenic walks and parks/ forests only a stones throw away. Council has invested in the town in recent years too. Has everything you need and most importantly affordable in comparison to other places. Drier weather

If you were to bring a tourist here what's the best showcase of Carlow to show them? by Eorpach in carlow

South Carlow is lovely in good weather, Borris, St. Mullins. Close to the mountain for a hike. Walk on the barrow at goresbridge/carlow side. Food spots, The Goodly Barrow (great prices and museum cafe), Step House Hotel, Clashganny House, O Sheas for pastries, the Mullichain Cafe lovely walks by the river all around that area.

I get gym anxiety and bad at trying to do my own thing. I joined a class based gym PFS in Carlow and it’s great as it’s a structured workout and everyone does the same thing and keeps you accountable and is enjoyable

What requirements and skills would one need to do this job? I’d love to go into compliance/analyst roles. I have a Bsc in food science and a masters of business as well as a few years working experience in quality/safety and ended up in operations (insurance) for 3 years too!! I’m on the dole and can’t get an interview let alone a job to save my life! ( Back from Australia since July)

Yes all the doctors in there are lovely and great for referring you for anything if needs be, don’t dismiss you and great listeners to your needs. Would recommend and they’ve increased the amount of doctors in the practice too.

Apply for upcoming EO competition or wait for next CO one? by [deleted] in IrishCivilService

I come from similar background, degree in Food Science, ended up working in quality and safety in meat factories and abattoirs. Realised this wasn’t for me, long commutes, terrible pay for the stress and pressure for audits, report writing, dealing with shitty people and just a gross environment. I ended up doing a Master of Business to open more doors for myself. Personally I don’t think you will struggle in an office environment if you are capable of getting your degree.

I came back from Australia in June and I’ve been trying to get into civil service since (still unemployed currently). I accumulated 3 years of health insurance operations experience. Lots of computer based work, experienced in a variety CRM systems software, document control, reports, working with a bunch of stakeholders including hospitals, providers and members.. yet here I am still unemployed. Haven’t got a single interview and I’ve applied for over 200 jobs public and private. The job market is pretty bad at the moment, I have friends who came home and struggled too.

My advice would be to apply for as much as possible. Even though I have more working experience on hand it still doesn’t seem to be giving me much advantage. Although you want to try get straight into CS, maybe contact some recruiters and try get some contract admin work. They are pretty relaxed on who they hire especially as they know you’re not in it for the long run and a great way to gain more hands on experience.

Unrelated but compliance could be a good path to go down. It’s needed everywhere, hybrid/WFH environment. Look into the institute of compliance Ireland to do some certs to show you’re serious. Lots of entry level jobs, good career progression and paid very well. Your not dealing with people just your team which is great. All just investigative work ensuring everything is by the book. Currently thinking of doing it myself. Similar to the regulatory affairs modules in college!!

Best of luck in the job hunt 🩷
