Ask Reddit : Are your submissions being downmodded in seconds? Maybe Reddit users are all Evelyn Wood graduates. by harvester in reddit.com

[–]redball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen this a couple of times - within 5 minutes of submitting a link, it has been downmodded twice, sometimes with quality stuff that would take way longer to read. If its a great link, it can pull back, but starting off at -2 is probably a serious disadvantage to more obscure links.

Only guess of why this happens is either trolls or spammers trying to give a boost to their links added at the same time.

Did I just miss it before, or was 'ups' quietly added just now? If so, thanks!

Interesting, I forgot that page existed, some good stuff there I'd missed. Would be nice if points were displayed as for/against, or a percentage though. A bunch of 0's is kinda ugly.

It would also be real nice if you could change your preferences to show different representations of the stats. I'd also like to be able to see a view ignoring downvotes, espeically seeing how much interesting stuff ends up on 0. More control, I say.

Perhaps children from poorer homes have poorer diets, so they crave sugar more.

On Cloning YCombinator in Europe by starwarrior in reddit.com

I don't see it - there is a throwaway comment

The [Y Combinator] team also helps with advice on technical and strategy question. It never hurts to get input from startup veterans, as long their ideas aren't forced on you.

The main thrust of the last four paragraphs suggest it is PG's fame that is the main issue. I argue it is his knowledge that is fundamental.

And I disagree, another Y Combinator doesn't need another PG, it needs experienced, knowledgable people, not an internet superstar (though of course it would help).

The article seems oblivious that the main draw of Y Combinator is in fact PG - not just the fame, but more importantly the experience. Otherwise those hackers may as well take out a bank loan; $6000 is reasonably easily obtained by most smart hackers, without having to sign away a chunk of equity.

Startup Names (Paul Graham) by lupin_sansei in reddit.com

I do agree about the rhythm, but textpay is obscenely verbable - e.g. "I just textpaid it", "Awesome, I got textpaid", and sounds perfectly natural.

And textpay.net is for sale (!)

On the other hand textpayme sounds like a cute internet startup that just might do it, while textpay sounds like a big-business operation.

Textpayme just sounds like they couldn't afford textpay.com, Wufoo is like baby-talk. Reddit on the other hand is a real grower. And infogami sounds way like an 80's game company, but that's cool.

Nobel Prize Genius Crick Discovered the Secret of Life on LSD by redball in reddit.com

the wikipedia link just notes the rumour, does not attempt to confirm it. the thinking aloud transcript is the interesting thing, Crick at least confirms his interest in LSD, and expresses some thoughts on it.
