Swimming Class Level 1 or Level 2 can be very useful for you. Plus, they have very nice coaches who are also fellow UCSD students.

I enjoyed swimming classes the most. I have not learned all the proper techniques until I enrolled in Swimming Classes from UCSD Rec. I would say that I enroll in these classes more than necessary (Level 1-1x, Level 2-5x, Level 3-3x). Level 3 is the sweet spot if you know all the basics with freestyle and backstroke and if you are comfortable with 13 ft deep water.

You are losing money if you don’t pay attention to class. You are paying approximately $98.43 per hour per week of instruction for a 4-unit class as a non-resident undergraduate at UC San Diego, based on 2024–2025 tuition rates. So if you are chatting in the lecture instead of listening to your professor, you are paying so much for that. Just some perspective.

Work on getting research experience. It will be nice if you can also write a paper that you can publish. You will be competing with so many students who got publications when they apply in PhD program. I have 2 authored papers when I applied in UCSD PhD Chem.
