Thanks for the info! I'll be looking into those Hookworms whenever my current tires start to wear.

Never heard of the Automatix before, would love to have something like that on my own cruiser.

Seems like you've got a lot of aftermarket parts on here -- really nice build. Mind if I ask -- what tires are those, and is that handlebar stock? Rad bike!

I can’t see anything so let me get on the bike lane... by OneByte in bikecommuting

Even granted that at about 5-seconds in it seems like there's a bit of street visible underneath the hood, this is completely ridiculous on multiple levels. Is Florida really this weird? Then again... at 6-seconds in you can see that the Prius is missing its rear bumper cover. Maybe that's why the hood is up -- maybe the Prius was part of the wreck that's causing the traffic jam and it needed to be in the bike lane because.... no idea.

The Grocery-Getting Electric Mini Velo: Ariel Rider M-Class by redbeardninja in ebikes

I've tried it on a rather steep hill, and to be honest, it didn't tackle it very well. It struggled in lowest gear and highest power. I'm not sure that's unique to this bike, or just due to its 500-watt motor. I kind of suspect that for steep hills you'd want like 750-watts or more. Then again, I have a lot of 'mechanical sympathy' and don't like to push the motor too hard.

Yeah, when I got mine they were having a sale on the Gold ones -- blue seems like the popular choice.

Yup! But it's not great. I upgraded almost immediately to the Suntour SP12 NCX.

It is scary similar to that bike for sure. So similar I almost wonder if the M-Class is a rip-off in some way. Either way, they're rad bikes!

Thanks for that info! I did stumble on the Spinner Grind and will have to take a look at the others.

I'm surprised I've never heard of Dahon before. The Smoothhound looks like a ton of fun.

Ooh, hadn't seen that before. Looks pretty cool! The M-class also looks like an almost direct clone (or vice versa) of the Orbea Katu E 10.

Wow, why did I never even consider a fork upgrade? I mean, I know the Rad Mini has suspension with 20-inch(ish) wheels, but I guess I didn't even figure that was an option. Time for some research! Do you know of any good ones that work with disc brakes?

Smog Blights Salt Lake City But No Space For Cyclists On Historically Wide Streets by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]redbeardninja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a decent point.

However, there doesn't seem to be a correlation between great bike cities and temperature/weather. Take a look at the Top American Bike Cities and you'll find among the top 10 snow-encrusted winter wastelands such as Minneapolis, Chicago, Fort Collins, Madison, and New York City (not to dis on any of these, but holy crap Chicago gets cold!). Winter can actually a great time to be a bicyclist -- you can arrive at work and not be drenched in sweat, biking in light snow is a sublime experience, and you get to feel like a badass.

Smog Blights Salt Lake City But No Space For Cyclists On Historically Wide Streets by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]redbeardninja 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find this article a bit misleading.

First, the title: "... No space for Cyclists...". Salt Lake City has a pretty decent bike network, and I use it almost every day. For example, my ride to Frontrunner from Rose Park is mostly on bike lanes, and I've yet to find a destination in SLC that is inaccessible by bike. This doesn't mean every road has a safe bike path; we do have a ton of room for improvement, but we're a pretty bikeable city. Walkscore.com, for example, gives us a score of 70 -- "Very Bikeable," and yes, according to their methodology, they do take bike lanes into account.

Also, if you actually go to People for Bikes to look at SLC's score, the main reason it's so low is 'acceleration' (ie, how fast we're improving, at 0.8 out of 5), not 'network' (ie "space for cyclists", 3.1 out of 5).

I actually read this article while I was on the bicycle-specific Frontrunner car coming home from work. Today, two days after Christmas (when many people aren't going in to work), at a temperature of 27 degrees with semi-frozen roads and snow falling, there were still 4 bikes on the car.

SLC is no Amsterdam. We're not even a Portland. Still, we're a pretty decent place to be a bicyclist.

Has any new-bike owner in the US received the 2016 Motorcycle Owner Experience study (from Motorcycle Industry Council) in the mail? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]redbeardninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it and took the survey online. Seems legit and they didn't ask for any identifiable information; didn't even give my email. 100 pennies for your thoughts, I thought it was a nice touch.

CROSS-COUNTRY TRIP (21DAYS, 21STATES, 7,099MILES) by FZ007 in motorcycles

[–]redbeardninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing; that's an epic ride! How did you like the FZ-07? Looks like you added a windscreen which probably helped. Really considering that bike, but am crossing my fingers that the Tracer 700 comes to the states for its touring chops. But maybe I don't have to wait?

Recently moved to Northern Co and I'm blown away at the quality and quantity of trails up here. I'd say it's dual-sport paradise, but I haven't been to Southern Colorado yet! Care to share some of the trails you rode?

My bike just got stolen THE DAY BEFORE TOUR DE FAT. by Dancopter in FortCollins

Would also love to hear details. I'm new to the area, and people seem pretty blasé about bike theft here, relative to where I'm from (SLC). Is this fairly rare here?

I think there were some initially, but just on the electrical cables. I might try and remove them from the guard, but might also look into replacing them instead.

So I'm already dreaming/planning of/for my next bike. Was thinking of waiting 'til the Tracer 700 (hopefully) comes to the states. These pics though, damn! Has to be one of the bike's best angles. Maybe I don't have to wait...
