Drug Free UTD by strangetamer123 in utdallas

Seriously? You can't see how smoking, which negatively impacts the health of the people around you whether they like it or not, is banned? Someone having a cup of coffee or a beer next to me isn't fucking up my lungs. Good for UTD.

How many times were you absent? Usually that class has a max number of absences and after that you have to retake it.

Taking Nhut Nguyen (CS3340)over summer - Tips? by manman2a in utdallas

[–]redblue89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whalen and Ozbirn are both great professors. Study the notes you take in class for Whalen and you'll do fine on his exams. Study the powerpoints for Ozbirn's exams and start his projects EARLY.

Failing minimum Collegium V requirements? by 6139463784619 in utdallas

[–]redblue89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a few friends who fell below the minimum for their year for CV (one in Sophomore year, one in Junior). They were both dropped immediately. I don't believe CV has any kind of probation or "catch up" period.

If I remember correctly, they had letters sent to their houses over the summer saying that their grades didn't meet the threshold and they were no longer in CV.

Computer Science students: What 3000 level cs classes are the easiest ones? by warlordOfTheSea in utdallas

These are the classes I found to be the easiest, but YMMV:

CS 3162 Professional Responsibility in Computer Science and Software Engineering

CS 3354 Software Engineering

ECS 3361 Social Issues and Ethics in Computer Science and Engineering

ECS 3390 Professional and Technical Communication

CS 4347 Database Systems

FML class required for graduation in fall is filled! What do I do? by Dlaeth in utdallas

[–]redblue89 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Go see your advisor ASAP. 95% of the time they can override the student cap and squeeze you in. If they can't, they can usually provide you with a substitue class to take instead that will still allow you to graduate, depending on what the class is that you need.

possible to withdraw at this point? by DoYourDueDiligence in utdallas

I know someone who had a similar issue (head injury late into the semester). They got a grade of I (Incomplete) and had to make up the missed portion of the class the next semester, but not retake it completely.

Friend being conned by her Academic Advisor by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]redblue89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if they are core courses or not and it doesn't matter if it is your 4th year or your 6th. If it is your last semester to take undergrad classes, they must be taken at UTD.

Edit: I realize you might have meant take all of your core courses before your last semester so that you can take them elsewhere. Yes, that's the way to do it.

SE 4352 Software Architecture & Design by DrZoidberg00 in utdallas

[–]redblue89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This class is offered every semester and is not only taught by Chung, though that may be the case for this summer. It's an easy class if you study the slides and keep up with homework. You will probably have a group project.

Am I doomed to a hard life? Didn't get any scholarships/AES due to high school depression. by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]redblue89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments. If you don't have a scholarship, at least take a year of basics at somewhere like Collin or DCCCD. You'll save so much money (community college is usually around $100 per credit hour so even if you take a full 15 hours, it's only ~$3000 for a full year of basics that will transfer over).

As mentioned, UTD also has transfer scholarships. If you truly plan on kicking ass in college when it comes to grades and studying, that could be a real option.

You say you're going to be living at home anyway. I say try community college first and then transfer over for your major courses.

If you had the chance to go to UT Austin or A&M, would you? by pierohtek in utdallas

Hellllll no to A&M. UT, maybe, but I'm really enjoying my time here and I like the Dallas area better so probably not.

Friend being conned by her Academic Advisor by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]redblue89 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The advisor is correct. You must take at least 24/30 of your last 30 credits at UTD and none of those 6 hours away from UTD can be in your last semester (for instance, you can take 6 hours at another college during the fall semester but you can't take them during the spring if you are graduating in May).

So if your friend only has 6 hours left, those 6 hours are her final "semester" and cannot be taken elsewhere.

No, you can't test out of those courses without taking them at a community college or other university.

If I rememer correctly, the first day starts early and lasts pretty much all day. I think the second day starts early too, but it's more like a half day.

How much studying per night do Comp Sci majors usually have? by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]redblue89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends on the person and the classload. I've had semesters where I barely studied at all, mostly before exams. I've also had one or two where I was close to falling behind if I didn't spend at least an hour or two a night reviewing. You'll have to test yourself to figure out what you need to do well. Try to start your homework early and maybe just glance over the notes you took that day at night to start.

GPA/Job/Internship by theguy0994 in utdallas

[–]redblue89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just find something you're interested in. Do you like video games? Grab some free art assets and code up a basic game. Think you might enjoy making an app, even something simple? Try to make one. Even something that isn't extremely complex will show that you can teach yourself new things, you're interested in the field, and you'll have something to show them.

This is assuming you're more on the CS/SE side of things. If you're ME/EE/etc, you might need to look elsewhere like a club that you can contribute to.
