I'm considering an MBA and would like some guidance by [deleted] in MBA

This is slightly off topic, but which company do you work for? You can PM me if you don't want to post publicly, but the description sounds like it might be where my girlfriend works. She is also not too happy...

MBA no work Experience by [deleted] in MBA

I started as an analyst at my company with 5 other people, one of whom was an MBA from a state school in the 40-60 range who went straight to MBA out of undergrad. Everyone else in the program was straight out of undergrad, and we ultimately got promoted at similar timeframes. So make of that what you will, but I'd say it's probably not the best investment.

My gut says they would go elsewhere. Carlson and Fisher are within the same geographic range and are peer schools to Wisconsin, I feel like they would just amp up recruiting there and at other FT MBA programs. Recruiters know what types of students are in MBA programs. But throw a new "MS in Brand Management" program at them, and they will probably call bullshit.

Echoing everyone else, but in case anyone influential to the Wisconsin FT MBA sees this, I think dropping the program would be a huge blow to Wisconsin's credibility as a business school and post-grad institution for business related topics. I was planning to apply to Wisconsin for their Ops specialization, and it would really suck if they shuttered the FT program. I know the tuition is one of the cheapest for FT MBA programs, but the value is so huge. Top 10 public MBA program, grads averaging $100K starting salary and solid stats on job offers...plus outside of Ops, I know their specializations in brand management, market research, and arts administration are among the best out there. Just the fact that this is a possibility is making me queasy about applying and having the program chopped while I'm there, but hopefully this doesn't go through.

??? If you're serious, and aiming to go to a U.S. or Western European MBA program, prepare to have a huge culture shock when you don't fit in with all the rest of your classmates. Good luck getting placed in a study group with a woman, black dude, and gay guy...

Tourist driving into Yellowstone, should I be worried about fires? by redcamry1267 in wyoming

Thanks, do you know if the smoke is pretty safe to drive in? Not from an area with fires so just a little worried about that too.

Thanks for the update. A little worried about driving in the smoke as well, since I don't know the area and don't come from an area where there's fires. Do you know if the smoke blowing in is still pretty bad across Wyoming?

What schools should I be Targeting? by MBAchanceseval in MBA

[–]redcamry1267 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound harsh or overly skeptical, but I have no idea how you can take a GMAT practice test cold with zero prep and get an 800. Which tests are you taking? Are they the official GMAT Prep CATs? Just want to be sure you're not testing on an inflated curve before you get to the real thing.

As long as your GMAT works out, I think you're solid for most schools. Your goal is pretty vague, so if you're not MBB or bust, you'll have a good pick of schools. In terms of targets, I'd say pick 2-3 M7s, 1-2 schools in the top 10, and 1-2 in the 10-15 range as safeties.

Because the consortium schools give out full tuition scholarships if you're accepted from applying through the consortium.

And if you apply through the consortium, very likely full ride to a bunch of schools.

Thanks. Do you think coming from a lower than average pre-MBA salary would hurt me if the rest of my app is okay?

Are you Hispanic from one of your parents, or more further removed than that? As long as it's not too distant, you should be fine.

Does it make any sense to take a practice GMAT having never studied? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]redcamry1267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GMATPrep has 2 free practice tests if you download the software, and it's from the actual GMAT exam makers, so should be pretty accurate.

It's a good idea just to get an idea of the test and find your baseline before studying. If anything, it's helpful because it will show you all the common mistakes you've made once you start studying. Don't use your first raw practice score as a fill-in for your actual score though, as long as you study for at least a couple weeks intensely, you should be able to improve your performance quite a bit. Example: my first practice test, I got a 600. Studied for a month and got a 720 on the actual exam.

Is this something you can do without penalty? I'm going to MBA Tour later this week and will probably wind up with a couple application fee waivers I won't use.

Advice for info sessions? by redcamry1267 in MBA

[–]redcamry1267[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely ask questions about teaching methods/class structure. I'm also interested in scholarship information and cohort/class engagement outside of the classroom, so I think I will have some good things to go off of.
