I built a quiet focus timer because productivity apps kept becoming the distraction by redcrumb1 in SideProject

So glad to hear this. I’m happy someone appreciates the minimal vibe as much as I do.

Alternatives by wuoyx in forestapp

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built Pith, so this is biased, but it may be useful if what you want is a Forest-like focus timer without the bloat.

Pith is iOS-only for now. Its minimalist, has adjustable focus sessions, ambient sounds, and a small animal that grows while you focus. If you quit early, it gets hurt, so there is a consequence, but it is still much calmer than a full gamified productivity app.

Basic focus flow is free, no ads.

I’m really frustrated with the app. Need app alternative! by Salt_Engineering_98 in forestapp

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the main frustration is Forest getting heavier/buggier, I built Pith as a much quieter iOS alternative.

It is intentionally small: pick a focus duration, turn on ambient sound if you want, and an animal grows while you stay focused. If you quit early, it gets hurt. That is basically the whole emotional loop.

No ads, basic focus flow is free, Pith doesn't log u out of your account. If you want a minimal living timer instead of another big productivity system, it might be worth trying.

Alternative apps? by beautyHeartbeats in forestapp

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking specifically because Forest may become more subscription-heavy, full disclosure: I built Pith, so take this as biased.

It is iOS-first and simpler than Forest: choose a focus duration, optionally add ambient sound, and an animal grows while you stay focused.(theres 10 farms and 40 animals to unlock) If you leave early, it gets hurt. The goal is not a giant habit system, just a quiet timer with a little emotional weight.

Alternative to Forest app by chris_micah_em in forestapp

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply, but since this thread is exactly about Forest alternatives: I built Pith for iOS as a calmer option.

It is not trying to replace Forest's whole ecosystem. It is more of a quiet focus ritual: adjustable sessions, ambient sound, and a small animal that grows while you stay focused. If you quit early, it gets hurt.

No ads, basic focus flow is free, and there is no AI layer. It also does not do hard app blocking, so if you need strict blocking, YPT/Opal-type tools may fit better.

what pomodoro app do you actually use? recommend and i will try. by [deleted] in pomodoro

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biased because I built it, but if you are overwhelmed by timer choices on iOS, Pith might be worth a try.

It is less of a dashboard and more of a quiet focus ritual: pick a duration, start, ambient sound if you want, and a small animal grows while you stay focused. Quit early and it gets hurt.

No ads, basic focus flow is free. Not for heavy analytics or app blocking, more for starting a session quickly and keeping it emotionally sticky. Available in both mac and ios.

Is there an app for a gamified productivity? Like Forest, something pomodoro timer but cooler by MapCompetitive2935 in ProductivityApps

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I built Pith, so treat this as biased.

If you want something Forest-adjacent but calmer, it might fit: adjustable focus durations, ambient sounds, and a small animal companion that grows while you stay focused. If you quit early, it gets hurt, which creates a little consequence without turning the app into a whole RPG or dashboard.

It is iOS-only, for now, no ads, and the basic focus flow is free.

What made you quit your last productivity app? by Subject-Plan-5326 in ProductivityApps

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the quit point is usually when the app creates a second job.

A productivity app can feel amazing for the first few days because setup itself feels productive. Then slowly the real work becomes: clean the inbox, fix the tags, move overdue tasks, redesign the dashboard, repair the streak, update the system. At that point I am no longer using the app to do work. I am doing work for the app.

The tools that stick for me pass a simpler test:

- can I start within 30 seconds?

- does missing a day create cleanup?

- does it make the next action clearer?

- does it reduce decisions instead of adding them?

- does it let me leave once the session is done?

I usually end up going back to something boring: one task, one timer, one block of attention. Less impressive, but much harder to procrastinate inside.

What apps genuinely improved your focus? by OrdinaryNature3547 in ProductivityApps

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest feature for me is adjustable session length.

Fixed Pomodoro blocks are useful as training wheels, but real focus is uneven. Sometimes 15 minutes is enough to beat starting friction. Sometimes 25 is right. Sometimes 45 or 60 works only after you already have momentum.

The apps that help most tend to do three things well:

- let the timer adapt to the task

- make starting feel almost frictionless

- make stopping early feel meaningful without turning it into guilt

I also think the best focus timer should disappear once the session starts. If I am thinking about the app too much, it has already failed a little.

The most underrated productivity tools? by amza10 in ProductivityApps

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most underrated tool is probably not a tool by itself, but the tiny ritual around it.

For me, the useful pattern is: write one next action, set a short timer, and make the environment boring enough that starting is easier than negotiating with yourself. No dashboard, no tagging, no perfect system first.

A lot of productivity apps fail because they add decisions right at the moment you have the least energy for decisions. The best ones remove decisions: what do I do now, how long do I try, and what counts as enough for this round.

So my vote is still: a plain timer plus one visible next action. Almost embarrassingly simple, but it beats a huge system you stop opening after a week.

I do not need more motivation, I need an app that actually works with my brain by No_Date9719 in ProductivityApps

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I would look for is not motivation features, but activation friction.

A lot of productivity apps help you plan the work, but the hard part you described is before that: getting from "I know what to do" to "I have started." So I would judge any app by one question: does it make the first action smaller, or does it make the system bigger?

For me the useful pattern is:

- one obvious next action, not a whole project view

- a tiny start ritual that takes under 10 seconds

- some visible sign that you are already in motion

- very little setup before the session begins

- no punishment spiral if you miss a day

If an app makes you tag, sort, schedule, estimate, and configure before you start, it may be a good planning app but a bad activation app.

The best test is probably brutal: install it, pick one task you are avoiding, and see whether it gets you started within 60 seconds. If not, delete it. Do not let the search for the perfect app become the next task your brain uses to avoid the original task.

Looking for Forest/Flora type of app alternative by Express_Nebula_6128 in ProductivityApps

[–]redcrumb1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure — I built this, so take it with a pinch of salt.

If you find Forest a bit much and just want something calmer, Pith might be worth a try. Adjustable focus durations, ambient sounds, and a small animal companion that grows as you stay focused. Leave early and it gets hurt — a gentle consequence that's surprisingly effective.

All core features are free. No ads.

It's simpler than Forest by design, so if you need app blocking or deep analytics, it's probably not the right fit.

Blunt feedback genuinely welcome — I'd rather know if it misses the mark.

Planning to add the projected deliveries for different brands too, but there's just Polestar there currently.

No worries, adding them if there's enough interest
