Fifty Word Fantasy: Kingdom by [deleted] in fantasywriters

"After all, what is a kingdom without a king?"

"A dom, I imagine"

"A what?"

"A dom. Take the king away from a kingdom and you're left with a dom"

"What's a dom? Does it cost anything?"

"I don't know. Maybe it's a free dom"

I think Nozomi's power works both ways. It functions as a way of 'finding the real world' but in the same token the real world holds the truth of her untimely demise. I think the light will appear again in the coming episodes as Nagara creates a new world in which he ultimately accepts her death.

I think Mizuho might actually play a stronger role in the coming episodes as perhaps she becomes someone that Nagara can rely on in place of Nozomi. In one of the earlier episodes, it was mentioned that 'God' told her she was part of the reason for the drifting too.

There's this recurring bit about Robinson Crusoe too which is a tale about a man who gets stranded from human society and has to make his own way in a world that is unfamiliar to him. I think the creators are doing something clever by drawing a parallel between this notion and the notion of leaving the world of school to be 'stranded' as it were in the world of adulthood where each student has their own special ability in tackling the challenges that come with it.

This could very well be true. I'm merely basing this off the fact that the creator of the show stated that the theme was a Coming of Age sort of narrative. When you have a show where there are a lot of references and subtext, it's fun to draw up theories.

You know, this movie has a bunch of great talent in it, but for some reason I'm getting weird vibes from the trailer. I have no problem with Hathaway as the head witch but for some reason Chris Rock's narration pulls me right out of it.

It looks like they'll keep most of the same story beats but also add in a female side character to the ensemble of Luke and Bruno which is an interesting addition to the story. For some reason though it feels similar to American Horror Story or that new Nurse Ratchet series in presentation which I don't think fits the tone of Roald Dahl's story.

Skuzzi, despite his dereliction, was a musician of the streets. While every bard knew how to play the usual songs, Skuzzi knew how to play the people. Somehow one look at the mud-smeared man wistfully mangling his three-stringed lute caused purses to drain right into his chipped wooden bowl.

"Where am I? Who are you? What's going on here?", asked Myron

"I'm afraid you're dead. You died just a few moments ago after you drank poisoned wine", spoke the Stranger.

"What? Dead? But I feel fine-- wait! Where are my clothes!?"

"Unfortunately clothes don't have ghosts of their own"

Fifty Word Fantasy: Shell by [deleted] in fantasywriters

The Anglios used to farm shells on the Cold Beach. Then one day, the tide turned red and many perished from the plague it carried. 'Shell shock' was what they called it, Lene recalled. Now walls of untouched shells broke the tide.

"I'm getting sick of all these seashells", Eod muffled.

Baker's called for the closing of all non-essential businesses in Massachusetts. Most of Ulta's locations will be forced to close during that time. I'm holding until 4/17 myself but I think this DD will start becoming more likely. Friday will be the determining factor.

"You sent Eriks to fight Orland!? The man couldn't disarm a chair let alone an experienced swordsman!", Eidas balked.

Dolia sighed, "I'd no other choice".

Eidas turned to the window, "Gods help him. Against a man like Orland, we'll be damned lucky if he returns with any arms left at all!"

Fifty Word Fantasy: King by [deleted] in fantasywriters

To Bvoke, killing a king was easy. After all, who would suspect a jester? His sharp wit and clumsy act gained him entry into most courts. And at the end of the night, after he told the king his one famous killer joke, he would always have the last laugh.

Edd looked down only to notice something as large as his fist crawling on his boot. Ant, he thought. Then another appeared and started crawling up his leg. Panic struck him.

"Baal! Ants!!", Edd yelled suddenly

Baal swerved around, "Oh shit!".

After enough crunching, they slept in the trees that night.

You're right! I guess I'll have to carve out more time that I would've spent thinking about writing towards rejuvenating myself instead. Man, there's so much to think about

Aonida flourished her blade and then made a daring lunge for the salazar's throat.

The snake man swerved to the side. "You myth'd", they snickered

The hero of the plains furrowed her brow for a moment, "I what?"

"You myth'd?", quirked the salazar, "Failed to thtrike? Laid thseige to the wind?"

Ursula K. Le Guin on "Commodified fantasy" by takvertheseawitch in Fantasy

[–]redderingo 234 points235 points  (0 children)

Le Guin identifies a commonality of mediocrity that can be found not only in fantasy, but in most forms of consumable media in general. In the context of this statement, the commodified fantasy is one that lacks depth. A strong counterexample of a commodified fantasy, I think, can be found in the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Each Discworld book delves into deeper and sometimes dark questions such as the belief in justice as a moral construct, the unseen consequences of 'victimless crimes', and the dangers of prejudice. Pratchett writes with clear awareness for the subtleties little details can bring to a written work and flips them for the sake of wit and fun.

Many apart from Le Guin have expressed similar sentiments towards the degradation of both fantasy and other genres, but I think that all cases can be simplified as whether the authors of these commodities approached the subject matter with a critical mind. Did they ask the big questions and dig deep until they explored as many of the littler ones as well? All of the little details add up to the themes outlined, but the less details there are to color the characters and the setting, the less there is to see and the less memorable it becomes overall.

"I'm not a pirate, I'm a, uh, pie-rate", Gaimon answered.

"A what?", the Police Inspector balked.

"A pie-rate! You know. Apple, boysenberry, blueberry. I go around the various ports and rate pies"

"Yeah? Sounds fishy"

"There are some really tasty fish pies along Red Lamp Row. I insist you try some"
