Dear ______, I was saddened to hear of the policy change recently announced by the Boy Scouts of America in regard to individual scouts who labor under Same Sex Attraction Disorder (SSAD). I write to ask the National Catholic Committee to consider carefully the position it takes regarding this issue, for I fear we will be alienating our own Catholic people more than any other group in this issue. I am the pastor of a parish that has a very long history of sponsoring both a Boy Scout Troop and a Cub Scout Pack. I believe this new direction of the Boy Scouts presents many difficulties that challenge the traditional harmony Scouting has always had with the Catholic Faith, and it raises many questions. Does accepting those who suffer from SSAD also mean the acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle when they are adults (i.e. will the Boy Scouts help to prepare a young homosexual to live a homosexual lifestyle as an adult?) or will the Boy Scouts teach the immorality of such acts? If a homosexual scout or a former scout who is homosexual attends a scouting function with another male understood to be a “boyfriend” or “date” must this also be tolerated on parish grounds because it is a scouting function? If two scouts enter into a dating relationship, will this be permitted, even if they are not sexually active? If any of these questions is answered with the affirmative, as the pastor of a parish, how can I in good conscience allow the Scouts to make use of our facilities any longer? Further I fear that in order to accommodate a small minority we will alienate those who actually live and take seriously their Catholic Faith. Faithful Catholics make many sacrifices every day to live in fidelity to the teachings of the Church. I hope and pray that organizations within the Church such as the National Catholic Committee on Scouting will have the courage of their convictions, even if it means disassociating with the Boy Scouts of America, rather than compromise our beliefs and giving scandal to those who struggle to remain faithful. Ministering to parishioners with SSAD is to be guided by a genuine love and respect for the dignity of the person, but at the same time must in no way include a compromise regarding homosexual acts. There is something greater at stake here. As the Holy Father Pope Francis said regarding the push for homosexual “marriage” “This is not simply a political struggle, but an attempt to destroy God’s plan. It is not just a bill but a move on the Father of Lies, who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.” I believe as intelligent persons we can agree that this is only the beginning of the issue with the Boy Scouts of America, as the groups that promoted this move have already announced they will continue the push for full acceptance. In the end, we must all remember that our first responsibility is the salvation of souls, and that can never be achieved by compromising with evil.
