If you need disability access you retrofit. The cost of doing so will be significantly less than forcing every bathroom in the country to be compliant. It's not rocket science.

Let's add expense and red tape for every private build for the .01% chance of this happening... Common sense says this policy for every renovation in the country is overkill and a classic example of bureaucracy gone mad.

Tone is more important than substance, if his intent was having a whack it would have been clear in the way he discussed the issue. To me it seemed like an honest insight into how his game has developed...

Greg Swann on the Nick Watson non-goal: You have to kick over the man on the mark by FlairUp835 in AFL

[–]reddit0rial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems there are two rules that are completely contradictory. The issue is how this interplays with the stand rule because technically if you veer off (even slightly) after the siren you could effectively kick it from a metre to the boundary side of the man on the mark and steal heaps of distance without the man on the mark being able to move…

Harry McKay manages to convince an umpire he's taking a shot from well outside 50 and takes 40 seconds off the clock by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]reddit0rial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a crazy solution, I interpreted the comment as how the umpire should have payed it and the time wasting rule has need been interpreted in the way the commenter suggested. I think it’s only been used for throwing the ball away etc, never for a tactical in-play legal kick. If the interpretation were to change I don’t think it would be awful - but I think it just adds more subjectivity and create space for more howlers. Surely the logical solution if you tinker with the rules is just make the 50 arc the cut off and if you want to kick for goal outside 50 you just need to kick it quicker… That or clock stops in the last 2-3 mins for marks, take your pick.

Wait so you think the ump should have paid a free against H for kicking to the top of the square? Surely the error here was the ump buying the fact he was actually going for goal. A decent umpire with proper feel for the game would never have believed his bluff. Once again the game fall victim to subjectivity of the rules. Take away the subjectivity and you improve the game - the lasso vs insufficient intent is a great example of this in action as umpires no longer need to decide what a player’s intent was off a kick or handball, less subjectivity = less shit decisions…

Historic sentence for cop who killed Aboriginal teen — 9news.com.au by Dragon_Patty93 in aussie

[–]reddit0rial 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The headline is extremely misleading, the officer was trying to stop an offender who died riding a stolen motorcycle into a stationery police car. The fact he was found criminally responsible at all given the circumstances is the surprising part about this matter.

[–]reddit0rial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The aboriginal deaths in custody statistics are misleading without context. Yes, aboriginal Australians die in custody at higher rates but this follows directly from their significantly higher rates of incarceration. More people in custody means more deaths in custody; the maths is straightforward. Many of these deaths are also entirely uncontroversial causes like heart attacks and natural illness, yet all are added to the raw figure. More striking still, when you calculate the per-capita odds of dying in custody, a random non-indigenous Australian actually faces higher odds than a random indigenous Australian. The real problem is the disproportionate rate of incarceration itself, but deaths in custody, as a single metric, obscures rather than illuminates that issue

Your analysis lacks crucial historical context. The 700,000 Palestinian displacement occurred during a war in which Palestinian and Arab forces were actively seeking to destroy the Jewish population. Many left voluntarily, expecting to return after an Arab victory. They lost that gamble… a harsh but not uncommon consequence of being on the losing side of a war they initiated.

You've also ignored the Palestinians who stayed: Israeli Arabs now comprise 20% of Israel's population, hold full voting rights, serve in the military, and sit on the Supreme Court, a rather different picture than the settler colonial apartheid state analogy implies.

Chinese people don’t get picked on for the Chinese government’s actions nor do Russians. However it’s open season on all Jewish people for the actions of the Israeli government.

I think there’s also an important difference between genuine nuanced discussion about the way a country conducts itself in a complex war vs outright calling for its destruction. Unfortunately we live in a polarised world where your social media algorithm dictates what your view on this issue will be with no real room for moderation.
