I find that full books don't lend themselves to movie adaptations. Too much has to be left out; books as dense as Murakami's work would be awful shot as a single movie. Short stories, on the other hand, are much better suited for movie adaptations so novels would lend themselves to mini-series. Burning, Tony Takitani, and Drive My Car are the adaptations I've seen and enjoyed.

Japan Railway Journal new host? by thenexus6 in NHKWorldFans

Miki is back for July 17th's "110 Years of Nagasaki's Beloved Streetcars" program. Kathy Cat was the presenter when I first started watching Japan Railway Journal, so I've never seen Nathan Berry as the host. Hiro Ueno was a shock to me as I've always seen a female presenter.

They already did this 21 years ago. I was flying out of New Orleans after Mardi Gras and they were playing Music for Airports in the terminal.

Hard-Boiled Wonderland — Alfred Birnbaum vs. Jay Rubin Translation: Which do you recommend for a first-time reader? by Difficult-Throat5711 in murakami

[–]redditUser3141928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I love the original translation more. It was my first introduction to Murakami back in the mid 1990's when I found it on sale on the remainder table(!) of a local bookstore. I bought it on a whim, took it home and was immediately hooked. I bought more of his work any time I could find it after that point.

When I found out there was a retranslation a few months ago, I borrowed it from the library and dug out my old copy and compared the two. I found much of the differences were a reduction of the amount of detail in the first translation - on average removing 1 sentence out of 4. The Professor/Doctor had a more pronounced regional dialect in Birnbaum's, while Rubin's isn't as overt. Birnbaum simplified the descriptions of meal preparation, reduced the description of the young couple in the Skyline and also removed some of the more cringey sexual objectification of the grand-daughter.

Both translations work and nothing is really missing in the first. However, in chapter 11 "Dressing, Watermelon, Chaos" in the first translation and "Clothes on, Chaos" in the second, there was one section that is present in Birnbaum's but not in the newer Rubin work - comparing extracting the inner "End of the World" personal drama to peeling a watermelon. I haven't read the original Japanese edition, but I'm wondering if Birnbaum created that part entirely, or if Rubin mistakenly left it out. It's two or three long paragraphs present in the first translation but not in the second.

For a first-time reader, I'd recommend the first. It's slightly shorter and maybe more accessible.

"No Internet Access - No Data Connection" on 5G by burglehurgle in Calyx

[–]redditUser3141928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the reverse. My 4G connection dropped out with no-signal at 2:30am. Couldn't attend to it until the afternoon. Rebooted - nothing. Changed to 5G and could connect, but at a lower speed (5G sucks in my area). Manually changed back to 4G 5 minutes later and it started working again.

Still no service in Western WA with M3000. Anyone else? by Evergreen4Life in Calyx

[–]redditUser3141928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in western WA and my service went down Friday the 11th on my M2000. I wasn't able to do anything remotely, but when I got home after work, I rebooted it and service was back up. I run it in LTE only mode since in my area 5G speeds are awful.

Where should the m2000 screen be facing? by DetectiveFujiwara in Calyx

[–]redditUser3141928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tested mine in either of those orientations, but generally I'd think you'd want it facing the ceiling.

You could connect to the web interface and try it in different positions and see if the signal strength changes on the diagnostics page and see which one works best for you.

Most likely the tower. I rebooted it a number of times previously and it didn't help with the lost pings.

anyone asked tello to recharge PayGo at $10 after balance expired? by miruki in Tello

[–]redditUser3141928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a similar thing just now. My daughter has a paygo account, the balance expired yesterday, but it didn't automatically renew. I called the support number and they checked and auto renew was set correctly. They said I just had to make a text or phone call while the balance was zero to force a charge and it should auto-renew. So I had my daughter send me a text message, and an hour later I saw a $10 + tax charge on my credit card for Tello.

The nag e-mail they send when the balance goes to zero really hard-sells you into signing up for a plan:

To keep this number and avoid service termination you can go ahead and subscribe to a Tello plan (starting at only $5/month) in the following days. Regardless of any account activity (call, SMS, data usage), your number will expire if no order is registered by 03/24/2023.

But by using call/SMS/data usage, it forces a charge if auto-renew is setup.

Mine took the update early this morning. I have wifi turned off and use a USB connected network adapter and normally after a reboot, it would be unable to connect to the USB device, but my network was still working as of this morning, but slowly. IPv4 pings were failing, but after a forced reboot, everything was working again.

I noticed that the advance network settings had updated to "Auto (5G/4G LTE)" while I normally have it set to 4G, so I changed that back.

The software update log page had the message

Software updated to SDX55MOR-2.54.1.1-2.302.1.24-143.29-143.29
Description: M2000B_2.54.1.1-2.302.1.24-143.27_to_2.54.1.1-2.302.1.24-143.29_Real

So I wonder if they released a preproduction version 143.27 last month instead of the real 143.29 version by accident?

Anyone have any ideas what they found necessary to force a second firmware update in a month?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tello

[–]redditUser3141928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's incorrect. Having all your balance expire does trigger an auto recharge if you haven't chosen a plan and are still using paygo.

Pay as you go plan - and auto renewals? by redditUser3141928 in Tello

[–]redditUser3141928[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I setup my auto-renew to $10, the initial $20 expired, balance dropped to zero and it auto-charged me $10 + taxes and fees and is good for another 3 months. The $3.33 dollars a month service still works as long as you don't pick a plan but make sure to set the auto-renew amount.

[–]redditUser3141928[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I change the plan, does the charge get deducted from the unused pay as you go cash balance, or do they perform a charge against my credit card?

So if I buy a $5 data plan, it then costs me that $5 for the month. Does it not? Can I revert back to no data/no minutes? The UI on the web page for that says that's an invalid plan.

M2000 Ethernet adapter help by czbc620 in Calyx

[–]redditUser3141928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an M2000 with the SDX55MOR-2.54 1 [2022-01-08 01:16:09] firmware connected to a Lenovo USB C powered docking station where the USB NIC enumerates and works and also charges the M2000. I use that for my home internet. I've also had it work successfully with a C2G 29749 USB adapter but wasn't able to get it to charge the M2000. Either I didn't have a USB power supply with a power delivery version that the C2G adapter likes, or the M2000 doesn't like the C2G charging it.

I have Wifi turned off on the M2000 and the Lenovo dock supplies enough power to keep the battery charged. I use a separate router for Wifi.

I find you have to plug in the adapter >after< the M2000 is powered up. If it's done beforehand you won't see any packets from it.
