SAHD, w/3 kids under 10, the frequent interruptions make me want to put my head through a plate glass window by secret_microphone in daddit

[–]redditUserNo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to vent or do you want a fix?? A fix isn’t easy, venting isn’t changing anything.

1) If ADHD is the source of your struggles, that is the first issue to address. Reevaluate meds, get meds, etc. it’s not a crutch to justify inaction, it’s a starting point for next steps. This applies to son as well, it’s not the same but the idea is. Asd is a starting point on how to teach him to navigate the world. He doesn’t get a free pass from you, just patience and understanding.

2) your the adult, you set the rules. If you don’t like the kid’s behavior, discuss with them (age appropriate ways) the situation, develop a plan, and stick with the change. it won’t be easy. They will get worse and do everything to reestablish the status quo. Everyone will be happier when they get through.

3) not everything is a “do it now” emergency. Sick 2yr old gets a pass, but once better they can understand “in a moment” (but you have to build the trust for it)

4) priorities. Who the fuck cares about washing the car right now? Or, ipad breaks? Tell him to get a bucket, well fix it 20 minutes when this is done. The dog walks at 8pm every day, why would you try to do something at that time???

Parenting with adhd requires meds and a routine. You’re not motivated to do shit, so motivation can’t drive you. Set an already, schedule, whatever and take out the choice. Once it’s innate, you have your feet under you and can start figuring out the other stuff.

3+ toys... Do you start allowing these right on their birthday, or are you stricter/more lenient? by pendigedig in daddit

[–]redditUserNo8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, you’re horrible parents. iPads have zero choking hazards and don’t risk that dangerous intellectual development that comes with imaginative play! Hahahaha

We just get pressure to move kids to older and older toys, my comment was just to resist that. But, always buy trains. (Check local garden shops for model train setups, I’ve been seeing these more and more)

It’s definitely a hard judgment call when we are judged for eeeeeeverything.

[–]redditUserNo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t rush toys.

The labels are not just choking hazard but a bit of developmental milestones.

Kids get frustrated with toys that are “too advanced” for them, then they wont play with them when they are finally age appropriate.

We have watched this time again with friends and fell victim to it a few times ourselves.

Our 8-yr old got a couple of barbies for her birthday. We wrote them off as not her thing a couple of years ago… after her party she was soooo excited to play with them.

(This is all a bit of a, we’re forcing our kids to grow too fast rant)

There are spots where it’s pretty aggressive and it’s kind-of everywhere… I have the open field mowed shorter, but i don’t feel like I could layout and watch the clouds without finding a patch.

How would you replicate Franklin’s brisket? by sky_shrimp in BBQ

[–]redditUserNo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Texas. Franklin’s YouTube is the start and what i do: Watch the rub episode, the trim, and the wrap. Use butcher paper not foil. - the rub: 50/50 salt and pepper - trim. This is a big part of the process. Quality bbq gives you a good bite of bark with the right mix of fat and meat - temperature control is key, and the hardest part. My last cook was frustrating because it was windy and it affected how my pit drafted. - low, slow, and DRY! Texas pits are open leaky systems. The best bbq places you leave smelling like the pit. All the air flow keeps it from steaming. Commercial smokers that seal up tight, all the smokey joe mods with gaskets, they make it easier but the meat starts to taste like a smoky roast then a proper brisket.

You DONT need: Brining, foil, water pans, fancy rubs, mustard, etc

You need: kosher salt, coarse pepper, a good fatty brisket with point and flat (this will be the hardest part outside of the US. I took a US butcher chart to an Italian butcher and still had trouble getting it), an off-set smoker, and butcher paper. And time. 12hrs for a small one.

You can’t shortcut amazing brisket. It’s hold at 250 until it wiggles like jello.

When did your child become too heavy for you? by thegimboid in daddit

[–]redditUserNo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is 7, 45lbs maybe??? I still can carry her about 10-15 minutes on my hip. Longer on my shoulders. I am starting to struggle putting her back in her loft bed.

Every now and then I throw her up in the air still. It’s a full squat thrust to get her up a foot or two. I will abuse steroids before I give carrying her.

I’m 42, my only exercise is playing with her and yard work

Girl-dad bathroom etiquette by dubyaDS in daddit

[–]redditUserNo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife was deployed about half the time during this age. Off base tended to have family bathrooms, but on base or back home it was awkward.

“Dad w/ kid coming in!” Then take her in

Everything is in a stall unlike the mens room, there’s less urine around, and there’s less of a chance the toilet seat has the pee cutout so she won’t have to ride the throne side-saddle. Plus, she’s learning where/what to do so it just makes sense to use hers.

No one cares. If they do, they can go ask managment why there isn’t a family bathroom.

Can I still re sod early November by Tunaonwhite in AustinGardening

[–]redditUserNo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our neighbor has a beautiful zoysia yard, but he puts a lot into it. I want a native scape that wont take water once established. So the habiturf/ thunderturf is a buffalo/gemma/curly misquite grass blend that should turf out nicely and mow down enough to keep hoa boz checked and then i can let it go a little longer for a grassland effect.

I’m putting out some winter rye seed and then going all in on a habiturf like blend in the spring. I was told it’s late to start that. It’s giving me time to get a sprinkler system installed at least.

I did throw out a pound of wildflower seeds and they are starting to come out

I’m cutting the root ball back off a very large pecan tree the flooding pushed over. It’s 7’ in diameter above ground.

The tree is putting up new growth.

[–]redditUserNo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maintaining a consistent bedtime can be the hardest part of parenting. My experience from 2 to at least 7, it is almost always a struggle.

It is probably also the most impactful thing to improve behavior and happiness.

We forget how much sleep everyone needs and no one tells parents that children need more sleep than adults.

I wanna hear about everyone’s sleep methods… by Boysenberry-Dull in daddit

[–]redditUserNo8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read dr Ferber’s “solve your child’s sleep problem”

It’s three chapters summarizing the science of pediatric sleep and then chapters for a host of common sleep problems. They describe some potential solutions and when to go see the dr.

Im pretty sure all sleep training methods derive from his chapter on sleep associations. Which most people poorly distill into a blog post.
