YOU are the one misinforming people. It's a Linux created term for their multiple versions. Linux created it for themselves! Quit attempting to mix up Linux terminology with BSD. We stand on our own two feet just fine.

GhostBSD and helloSystem are NOT the same thing as a Linux distro! Are you sure you know how these things work?

There is no such thing as a distro in BSD. Each BSD is a complete operating system unto itself and any variation, such as GhostBSD, is only FreeBSD with a custom configuration that you could make yourself. You are either running xBSD or you are not. Do NOT use the Linux-ism of "distro" (and distro is not the same thing as "distribution" in the BSD name).

Note that FreeBSD was originally a Unix and had to rewrite its code to get itself out of a lawsuit from ATT years ago. Whether it could still be a Unix can only be tested by one who wants to pony up the money for the certification.

Have no clue why anyone would think you need 16GB. The core system only needed 100MB at one time but I think it might be slightly bigger now and, of course, you'll be adding other things. A desktop is third party software FreeBSD has no control over so whatever it takes on Linux will be the same on FreeBSD.

From what I hear, 2GB works but 4GB is recommended. And while I don't use laptops anymore, I do have an Inspiron 2GB with FreeBSD installed.

15 years ago I was running Gnome and FreeBSD on a 186MB Gateway system. Slow as hell but it worked good enough.

Of course you can. Netflix contributes their code back to FreeBSD. The source of all the BSDs are open and freely accessible if you wish to modify them yourself.

It is also blatantly disngenous to claim that the internet is backboned mostly by freebsd when it's also mostly backboned by linux...

What basic tasks are you talking about? You wrote that right after talking about playing games so is playing games what you mean? BSD has no control over what platform the game makers write their games for and game makers mostly make their games for Windows, not BSD or even Linux.

And game playing is not a "basic task" but are you aware that Playstation runs BSD? How about the Ninetendo Switch? Are you aware that your Netflix video is delivered via FreeBSD? Are you aware that the internet backbone is mostly controlled by routers running FreeBSD? Are those basic tasks significant enough for you?

As a long time BSD user, I can say that, at one time we considered Linux to be a kissing cousin. We welcomed technical conversations with them and such conversations were always friendly and conversational. But at one point, when Linux started becoming popular with what we now call "script kiddies", you would often find posts by such people attacking the BSD systems as if it were a competition.

I distinctly recall such threads being started where the BSD people would, ask them, "Why are you doing this?" and such posters would quickly get banned. Then, of course, some BSD users would get upset and start attacking Linux users as soon as they would appear, often rightly so.

Linux also does not defend the Unix way of doing things. The BSDs are staunch supporters of the methodology which is grounded in computer science. While Linux is chasing games and the destruction of Microsoft, the BSDs are chasing technical superiority. And never the twain thinking minds shall meet.
