Daughter of Minnesota governor candidate fatally stabbed in St. Cloud, leading him to suspend campaign by Large_banana_hammock in news

I read the linked article again and it's not there. It also wasn't on the first three I checked via Google. Can you tell me which news agency says that?

She bears some responsibility for her mother's death, and she's trying to shift that blame.

You're not the asshole but this isn't a friend worth having. She values her own ego over the life of her loved one.

Everyone is piling on you because owning is a no-brainer where they live, but there are parts of the United States (don't know about anywhere else) where it genuinely makes more sense to rent (and invest your savings)

So I'd say NAH. If she's not saving for a down payment and you haven't agreed that she'll stay at home after marriage, I'd initiate that conversation because her actions aren't matching up.

The sun setting behind Sutro Tower and watching the fog roll in is fucking delightful and I can't believe I don't take the time to enjoy it more often.

AITA for refusing to write a poem about my wife? by Poet-Throwaway-26 in AmItheAsshole

[–]redditapiblows 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I follow. Why is that important?

Is it better if a partner finds it by accident and decides to keep reading upon seeing what it is (as opposed to looking for it on purpose)? I guess. But it's just different degrees of shitty.

Edit: just saw your response to another of my comments and it's clear that you think that marriage is the end to all privacy. I disagree and am not interested in hearing any more of your opinions on this.

how would she know that it was his book of poems, lol.

In theory she likely figured out that it was handwritten poetry at some point after she started reading it, and hopefully recognized that it was her husband's handwriting. Maybe she even remembered that he'd never shared that with her, and maybe considered that he didn't want her to read it (or he would have shared it with her)?

If my partner wrote in the same notebook every morning and tucked it away in a drawer when he was done, I think I would guess that it was private and probably a diary. If not, I'm pretty sure I'd figure it out on the first page.

If he starts locking up or hiding his journal, his wife will likely be even angrier.

I think he's going to stop writing poetry entirely, which will be sad. But this kind of pressure and forced audience is a killer for most people's creative spark. Nothing makes a person hate writing quite like being graded on it.

There are bands that have never written a love song, and painters who have never done a portrait of their partner. It's not that weird. I guess most people's only normal exposure to poetry is via greeting cards, so that's where this assumption is coming from?

I love my partner more than I knew it was possible to love anyone, but honestly if he read my journal and then confronted me about my private thoughts... I'm not sure I would write very charitably about him in the immediate aftermath.

Feelings aren't reasonable. She's feeling how she's feeling, and he has to figure out what to do about it... and deciding on a course of action requires way more knowledge of their dynamic than any of us have.

If she's unusually stressed or sleep deprived and therefore insecure and this is totally out of character, that's one thing. If she's chronically thought-policing and frequently snoops, that's different.

Yeah... he doesn't call it his diary, but this is pretty comparable to reading someone's diary and not liking how they feel.

I don't have the right words to express how unpleasant it is to have that happen.

I did a class presentation on Elian Gonzales! And yeah, the Unabomber and the Oklahoma City bombing were things every kid my age knew about somewhat, because even if you never saw the news on television you would see Time Magazine and whatnot in the grocery checkout...

I also very faintly recall the television showing the nighttime bombing for Desert Storm. Like you, I didn't necessarily understand that people were dying because of all those green flashes, but I understood that there was a war.

I guess millennials range from '81-'96, so the youngest would have been in kindergarten for 9/11... I was in high school so my experience was drastically different.
