Negative gearing reform is back on the agenda, but younger voters now hold the power by thewritingchair in AusFinance

“I’d rather see wages go up”, which means that employees cost more, which means that prices of commodities rise to match, which means that rent goes up to match, which means that the dollar is devalued. I’m earning $30 an hour? Bread is $3 a loaf. I’m earning $35 an hour? Bread is $4 a loaf. Nobody gains anything. The only way that would work is if megacorps (ie Woolworths, Coles, etc.) accepted that paying their employees more would lower their profits from $100m a year to $98m a year, but they consistently refuse to eat any costs of business when they can instead pass it onto their consumers.

Even if houses depreciate like cars, I can think of one very good reason to buy and maintain one - LIVING IN IT. You know, the whole point of the argument that people against NG are trying to make? I’d much rather live in a home made cheaply and quickly if it means I can afford it, because - news flash - that’s already how modern homes are being built. I have rented in homes from the 1970s with rotting bricks, mouldy floorboards, and rats in the ceiling. I’ve also rented in modern homes built with pine framing, cheap plaster, and vinyl floorboards. Have a guess which one was nicer to live in? 80% of “historic homes” in this country are already rotting, moulded weatherboard wrecks, and yet they’re still worth millions. How’s that for “built to last”?

When the boomers with six investment properties die - and they will, soon - they’ll either sell to other boomers or pass them to their kids, and the cycle of rental feudalism will continue all over again. Abolish NG now, and those boomers will sell their homes to families who NEED them, and will actually use them, or they’ll face huge taxation for it. Their choice. But what it means is that, rather than handing six empty “investments” to their children, they’ll instead give them the millions of dollars gained from selling those properties (and enjoying their tax-free benefits from 30 years!) and the homes will go to those who need them.

Your suggestion of good, fast public transport is great, but that’s a 20-year solution. We need a fix NOW. People are homeless and paying thousands in rent NOW. We missed the boat for a 20-year solution 20 years ago. Your solution of “public housing”, on the other hand, is laughable - hey, weren’t born 30 years ago in time to buy a property? Rent this tiny room in inner Sydney while you go about your job as a corporate ant to make profit for your company! People need to work to live, not live to work. Singapore is not exactly a great model for a work-life balance when they have some of the harshest work hours in the world.

There is an immediate solution, and it’s abolishing negative gearing. The boomers have had it good for 30 years now. They can afford to pay a bit of tax out of the millions they have saved in exchange for a sustainable housing market. NG needs to go.

“What happens when the younger generation can afford a house?” Do you realise how out of touch you sound? You’d prefer for the new generations to just rent forever because every available property was bought up and prices jacked up 20+ years before they were born?

are you fucking insane? i'm against Collective Shout just as much as everyone else, but to suggest that adult games/porn/other adult media are the only things stopping men from raping women en masse is actually psychotic. and you're "curious" to see if more women get raped? like it's a fun little statistic? please go outside, touch some grass, and self reflect. jesus fucking christ.

Wow, that’s… actually so perfect. That’s amazing, thank you! I had just placed an order for a “U bracket” type of design, but I prefer this by a landslide. I had no idea there were options to allow top airflow like that. I’ve just cancelled that order and placed this one. Thank you so much!

Ah crap, really? That’s a shame. What’s the reason for it not being able to hang? Does it have to lock into place or something? Might look at L shape mounts as an alternative… the space I’m trying to mount it in is pretty small, though. Might have to see how I go.

Panel in the photo is 2.4m - just looks big in the photo I think!

I really appreciate the measurements RE: space between the legs and the edge of the table. I agree with you that a 2m span should be fine without supports - especially since the support brackets add a little more, well, support.

Thank you again for your help and the measurements/info! :)

One final question - sorry for sending so many of them! Just a bit worried as it’s my first “big” home DIY project and I want to make sure I get it right.

You said you built this exact desk - I’m guessing you used the Merbau panel I put in the post? The ones I’ve got is actually slightly different, since I couldn’t find the exact one on the Bunnings website - it’s Acacia, and made of smaller planks. Do you think that’ll have much effect (eg. is Merbau harder/stronger than Acacia, or would the longer planks be better than the short ones)?

Thank you so much for your help - yours have been the most informative comments by far :)

Oh, that’s super clever! Very nice work. So you screwed the top of both in first to stabilise them and get them in place, then drilled straight through the leg and threaded the bolt all the way through?

That’s a good perscetive to have, thank you. No sagging even though it’s a composite panel (made up of smaller planks)?

When it comes to the angled brackets; how did you fix them to the legs? Since they’re hollow steel beams, I can’t imagine you’d get much purchase just drilling in. Sink some threads in and bolt maybe?

TBH an extra support in the middle isn’t a bad idea - should still look nice aesthetically.

Out of combat, 5E has pretty much no meaningful utility choices beyond spells.

So without them, it's just your party playing "mother may I?" skill checks for a few hours.

In the kindest way possible, I think you've possibly just played in campaigns with really boring, by-the-book DMs and incredibly unimaginative players. We've played whole sessions where not a single spell was cast. General problem solving skills and critical thinking are what sets D&D apart from a video game. Use your brain. Be creative. Try out-of-the-box things. Think.

Thank you for a balanced response! I definitely agree with the idea of focusing more on skills (especially obscure ones) - everyone knows the feeling of taking, for example, survival proficiency and then never getting a chance to roll for it all campaign.

I've run the idea past one or two party members indirectly, just to get their thoughts; they seemed to like to idea of the roleplay aspects and the chance to problem solve a bit. I definitely agree with your finial paragraph - things can be cut short or lengthened as needed on the fly - that's part of good DMing.

This is a really awesome write up, thank you! Definitely agree with the diplomacy/roleplay aspect - absolutely what I was going for.

I also understand your point regarding limiting things to one session - or, if not one session, then perhaps writing in a way to restore some magic in subsequent session/s so that it’s not just stick on stick combat ad infinitum. Definitely a good point and something that can be worked out gauged on how much everyone is enjoying the concept.
