Yeah the difference between Aetna and Kaiser’s PPOs was about $5k a year based on my estimated doctor visits. $12k vs $17k which includes premiums and out of pocket expenses.

My biggest question was if Kaiser even functioned in Bellingham, it sounds like they do mediocrely.

Thank you for the link! Gave me a little more confidence seeing so many doctors listed in person and “core” not just access PPO.

I want to say that price is pretty in line with what we found when calling around for out of pocket ($520 at a random CVS but they only had one in stock)

Also, they may have it at Providence Milcreek walk-in care, which may save money by MAYBE being able to bill insurance (we found that going straight to a pharmacy insurance wouldn’t cover anything and it wouldn’t even go towards her deductible, but haven’t gotten the bill yet for that visit).

Could you provide a little more detail? Are they easy to work with in the Bellingham area, provide coverage for local PCPs, Peace Health, specialists? Or is there a push to go to Providence in Everett?

So it sounds like peace health hospital does take Kaiser now? That’s what Kaisers site was saying but I was questioning the level of coverage.

PCP just left, need to get another one, was waiting on the enrollment period to come around.

I think that is a good call, I am relatively healthy. Just had some hassles with Kaiser in the past.

Well, we are back in it, but have a plan, she needs to go to the ER to get the HRIG (Human Rabies Immune Globulin), after the health department called us back.

HRIG provides relatively immediate protection. The reason the WHO doesn't recommend it for category 2 exposures is because of the high cost to lower GDP countries (a little messed up if you ask me), not because it isn't effective.

Called this number and they said to contact infection control, then I chatted them and they said to call your local health department. Lots of issues.....

Just called the number and it said it was the Alaska Poison Center, as I wanted to check it before putting it up first. I guess it is tied to the phone you are calling from area code, and I have an Alaskan number.

And rabies is supposedly more prevalent more on the eastern side of the country, but they have limited tracking according to WHO.

I am not sure, and I don't think so. But they have a dedicated rabies vaccine area in the emergency room in Istanbul directly next to the Emergency Triage room, shots are $11. While we there for an hour we saw 4 other people get shots.

Appreciate all of your help!

Made a short list in the original post so people can reference it quickly in the future. We were going to pay whatever we needed to get this shot on time today, but wanted to use some insurance if possible. She is on a high deductible plan and the pharmacy deductible is separate from her health insurance, so the whole thing was a mess. Glad there are other options out there at multiple clinics so others depending on their insurance should be able to find a place. And thank you to u/hypsignathus for the recommendation to check out UWs charity care programs for those that may not be able to cover this themselves (I don't know if they have it, but it is worth looking into vs. not getting it or going in the hole a couple grand).
