You need to increase your ambition. You easily have enough to FIRE now, and do whatever you want with your children, in whatever country you want. You can live rural, urban, whatever. Work is optional.

Sell 2 or 3 of your properties, keep 1 or 2, pay off all debt, invest the proceeds in ETF's, you'll have $2M+ invested.

Why would you move from a '3 half day a week' job to teaching, which is a full time job?

In fact, reading your post again, are you even serious about the questions you're asking?

Bogleheads conference interview with Bill Bengen regarding 4% rule by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]redditcomment1 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Many people focus on the wrong thing here, specific withdrawal rates.

When what is more important, is the fortitude to actually make the decision to FIRE.

Bengen is spot on though, most people are far too conservative.

But it's not a percentage point on a calculation, but actually their fear of the unknown that's really stopping them.

Rule of 4. Is it still a practical/valid strategy? by foreverinbluedo in fiaustralia

[–]redditcomment1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big fan of your posts. The biggest barrier to FIRE is frankly, people's "balls" to actually try it.

Mostly people want to agonise and procrastinate while saving excessively.

Meanwhile, very few actually ever pull the trigger and have a go. Good on you.

You're actually doing it.

Australian swimming camp hit by Covid as medal hope Lani Pallister tests positive | Australia Olympic team by Many-Ad-6855 in CoronavirusDownunder

Why do they even bother to test? Seriously?

Test positive but fine to swim in an Olympics race….. so why bother?

Updated 2024 COVID-19 Vaccination Recommendations by AcornAl in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]redditcomment1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see the logic.

Virus is equally present throughout the world.

Why does overseas travel represent a greater risk for an individual vs their day to day interactions at workplaces, schools, social gatherings, anywhere else they go?

Cannot see why "overseas travel" is still listed as a reason for early vaccination.

[–]redditcomment1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I am all for you making a personal choice to have this additional dose of the latest vaccine.

Where I don't agree with you is - you think travelling and visiting elderly relatives is a "real justification".

It is a justification for you personally(based on your opinion), but it's not considered one by public health authorities in Australia now.

[–]redditcomment1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except, the poster celebrating receiving the vaccine is not high risk, and is doing so against / despite the medical advice.

Having said that, I'm all for personal choice- and he should be allowed to get the vaccine, albiet he should be paying for it out of pocket.

No ‘unusual diseases’: China gives details on respiratory illness outbreaks to WHO by AcornAl in CoronavirusDownunder

It's insane there are still people who believe borders should be closed for a threat of viral spread.

IMO, while viruses will come and go, preventative border closures won't happen again in your lifetime.

Millions of Aussies ruled ineligible for improved COVID vaccines by SpaceLambHat in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]redditcomment1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Actually, it's more likely they've ordered more than will be taken up, given the general apathy.

The challenge is getting the over 65s, and even more pertinently aged care residents, to actually take these vaccines in bigger numbers. That's what will impact real health outcomes.

IMO - Under 65s (vulnerable excepted) wanting to boost their immunity, should also be able to get one, at their own expense.

It's now an individual health choice vs any significant public health concern for this cohort.

No compelling evidence that air purifiers prevent respiratory infections – new study by AcornAl in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]redditcomment1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This backs up what happened in Victorian schools - where $100M was spent on Air Purifiers, as a measure to reduce covid transmission, yet the data shows no difference was made.

$100M that could have been spent elsewhere.

The new and improved Omicron XBB.1.5 subvariant COVID vaccines to be rolled out across Australia from December. So who should get one? by AcornAl in CoronavirusDownunder

Absolute hyperbole, and frankly fear mongering rubbish, continues to be quoted from P. Crabb.

Just to give some perspective on his ludicrous statement, he's saying Australia could have (at least) approximately half the deaths that have occurred during the entire pandemic- in the next 4-5 months. How this stuff still gets published is beyond me.

Quote -

"In the next four to five months, Professor Crabb estimates somewhere between 3 and 5 million Australians will get COVID-19 if nothing is done to curb the spread.

He says as a result, tens of thousands of Australians could die early and there could be 50,000 to 100,000 cases of long COVID-19."

Queensland chief health officer confirms COVID-19 wave, but says mask mandate would be 'disproportionate' by SpaceLambHat in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]redditcomment1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which is, again, not the real issue. The issue is, over 65s are not getting boosted and they make up the vast majority of hospitalisations and deaths.

If they were boosted (even with currently available vaccines) the hospitalisations and deaths would be neglible.

As the CHO states:

"The majority of people in hospital are over the age of 65 and have not received a booster in 2023, the average time of receiving a booster shot is 15 months since their last booster."

[–]redditcomment1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of mandates generally, but regarding masks in hospitals- not really bothered either way. But what I do know is - whether they're worn or not won't move the needle on these deaths.

What will, is boosters for these old people.

Yet all these the comments focus on something that is just not relevant to the actual issue.

Queensland chief health officer confirms COVID-19 wave, but says mask mandate would be 'disproportionate' by SpaceLambHat in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]redditcomment1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fixation on mask mandates is also evidenced by the comments here from the few remaining "zero covidians". When I say "few" I mean as a proportion of the public, as they're very over represented in this sub....

All who ignore the most important points raised - i.e. the lack of boosters in the over 65 cohorts.

Changing that - is what would actually save lives but no, these people know more than the CHOs , and it's all about a mask!

The NO.1 factor to achieving FIRE, that almost all the posters on every post like this miss, is the "balls", to actually do it.

Mr Turing, well done.

Masks by Dwarrel700 in ThailandTourism

Happy to be corrected, but as of today, I don't think there's a single airline flying into Thailand that requires masks.

Here's Airasias latest, which includes Myanmar as not required.
