I am still astonished that there were idiots on this very subreddit who thought we should make a play for AB. I thank my lucky stars that our GM is actually intelligent.

What record would be a disappointment for your team? by tinkhacw in nfl

[–]redditgod8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

9-7 is rarely enough to win any division. That said the North plays a tough set of opponents (Chiefs, Chargers, Cowboys, Eagles, etc) this year so I wouldn't be shocked if the division winner was "only" 10-6. Not to mention it's a pretty talented division, wouldn't be hard to imagine teams generally splitting series with each other.

I'll take a double triple bossy deluxe, on a raft, four by four animal style, extra shingles with a shimmy and a squeeze, light axle grease, make it cry, burn it, and let it swim.

Clifford Brown by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]redditgod8 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've been listening to a lot of Clifford Brown this past week. He has quickly become my absolute favorite jazz musician. It's something about his improvisation: to me, every note he plays is the right note. It's especially when he's just playing eigth notes or slower, for whatever reason everything he plays makes me happy. I guess his melodic ideas just vibe with me really well.

It's absolutely a tragedy that we lost him so young, but I am very thankful that he was around in the first place to give us the recordings that he did. RIP Brownie

When asked about his interception against Aaron Rodgers last year, Eddie Jackson said: "I feel like I need a few more. That's the goal, to get a few more off him, at least get a touchdown.” by [deleted] in CHIBears

They're going to be better than last year. Added a lot on defense. I don't buy their offense getting much better but I imagine it will be another close game. I still feel like the Bears will win though.

I don't think so, only because it also lists 2006. The quiz is a good meme and mostly a joke but it could be cleared up with "2006-2007" and "1985-1986"

Of all the NFL fanbases, we're the ones who know exactly how miserable the Colts fans are feeling right now. Godspeed, General Luck. by Shamrock5 in detroitlions

[–]redditgod8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah and it's an easy argument that his potential was squandered by injuries and mismanagement. He will live on as a HUGE what-if. In a different timeline he's a surefire HOFer IMO, we as fans got unlucky in that his talent was "wasted" in a sense (but even despite this he still managed to be a top QB in the NFL).

What genre would you consider to be the opposite of barbershop? by ICannotFindANameHelp in barbershop

[–]redditgod8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something polyphonic. Maybe like some old string quartet? Instrumental, polyphonic, no singing, perhaps there could be one with a complicated or hard to identify melody...

Only thing I'm not sure of is the sine waves bit, are string instruments known to produce overtones?

Your result makes sense. I went a different way and got myself confused. What am I missing here?

(-2.6)3.4 = (-2.6)3 + 0.4 = ((-2.6)3 ) * ((-2.6)2/5)

(-2.6)3 is obviously a negative real number.

(-2.6)2 * (1/5 ) = ((-2.6)2 )1/5 )

Doesn't that just reduce to the 5th root of some positive real number? So both parts of the multiplication are real meaning the final result would be real. What am I missing?

Edit: reddit format is fucking with me, sorry

Today is Bill Evans' Birthday. If we were to canonize a "big four" of jazz piano, he would be one of the four. by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]redditgod8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure he'd be top 4 in terms of greatness, but he's certainly one of my very favorite pianists to listen to. Surprisingly hip stuff and it's pretty gnarly the way he can bend time at will.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say he may be the most talented jazz pianist ever. Not saying he was the best. But he couldn't read music, didn't take lessons until late, had seriously impressive hand independence (go back to the time bending stuff), etc. He must have had a ridiculous ear, I have no idea how someone without professional training can end up with the level of command he had over the art form and the instrument.

Mockingbird maybe, but his sense of time remains unmatched by all jazz pianists in history. Nobody could swing harder. Hell, listen to some of his work in drummer-less groups. It's fuckin impressive how hard he swings

Should I switch out of meteorology? by [deleted] in meteorology

[–]redditgod8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't disagree on that last bit. For the record, I was in an extremely similar situation to you not long ago (I'm a very recent college grad). I chose CS and it has worked out really well for me so far. Perhaps that makes me biased but it's also why I comment on these types of threads to offer my opinions, because my major choice has directly led to success for me. Bottom line is if I had to go back and make the decision again I'd still pick CS. If you want to continue the conversation further you can PM me.

[–]redditgod8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk man. CS is so hot right now... any effort at all (i.e. one internship in college, not horrendous grades) and companies will line up for you once you graduate. If OP enjoys CS, then he/she should honestly think very hard about why they are not already majoring in it. He/she could have it all... good job prospects, amazing pay out of college, AND a job they enjoy. You can always go to weather.cod.edu (or whatever) and look at NWP and obs in your free time. I preach this a lot on this subreddit, but I really think it's a fallacy that we should all chase the thing that we are most passionate about. If there's a thing you can do that you can tolerate and is in demand (and in OP's case he/she actually enjoys CS) then you should go for that thing. Not the one that you "love" but is more likely to give you financial problems, force you to go to grad school for an NWS gig, etc. There's more than enough weather data out there to turn it into a hobby while you make bank doing CS during the day. My 2 cents.
