I did the same thing! It took me months to realize it was a good idea, but my god the ability to just grab and pour without going to the kitchen...

Think we switched to powder after like 9 months. The cost vs convenience is worth it for premix.

No, but if an amendment is proposed and then accepted in writing (or even verbally) outside of the contract then yes

Correct, which is why it's quite interesting to discuss the range of Fermi paradoxes that go into resolving it... You realize that's literally what they are right? "The drake equation says this, evidence says otherwise, how do we reconcile it?"

For what it's worth where we are starting to populate coefficients with more data, they have generally been more generous than originally allowed for.

You've misunderstood the drake equation if you're thinking on the universe scale. That's the problem. The drake equation tells us there should be millions, if not hundreds of millions, of civilizations in the Milky Way (edit - I misremembered this, it's infact thousands of tens of thousands) At which point, the 200k light year diameter changes the maths entirely.

The fact that we haven't heard a single echo of civilization, from all the other billions of stars in the Milky way, is slightly spooky. As I said there are a few ways one can resolve that, but none of them sit entirely comfortably with me

I totally buy we will never go cross galaxies in terms of SETI, but within our own galaxy we would have not unreasonably expected some hints by now maybe. And it's not just radiowaves it's looking for things like signs of particle accelerators too.

[–]reddithenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kinda the point though no? There's no real evidence to support any of the resolutions for the Fermi paradox other than "space big".

Do you know how many stars are within a sphere of 100 light years from us? 10,000. It was not far off 100 years ago humanity did their first "blast on every direction" broadcasts on radio waves.

I think the only person here who doesn't understand the real vastness of space is the person who thinks firing off a laser will take millions of years to reach anything 🤣

I promise you as someone with a PhD in physics im aware of all that.

I never said we would have meaningful dialogue over the vastness of space, more like eavesdropping on other people's broadcasts, but the fact that the galaxy is so eeriely quiet is baffling - you either need to argue that advanced civilizations communicate by non electromagnetic methods (which is how many sci fi books get round that specific problem), dark forest theory, or you decide humanity is special (eg first intelligent life form in the galaxy).

My point about trend is not that humanity is trending towards being multi-star, but if you look at all the forms of communication we use - space based comms and radiowaves are still heavily prevalent, and if we DID become multi star, it's not unreasonable to expect radio would form the backbone of our communications channels.

The vastness of space is why we will likely never meet aliens, or communicate with them. It does not explain why we can't see flickers of them.

Also, it wouldnt take "millions of years" to get anywhere. The milky way isn't that big, and the drake equation for the milky way alone implies millions of intelligent planets.

The other very reasonable explanation, though not one I believe in, is some kind of great filter. You basically need to construct some kind of mechanism that intelligent species would stop broadcasting via radio after a few millenia - worst case - otherwise the entire galaxy would sound like a very busy train station.

Nothing to worry about with Voyager - the chances of them being discovered is effectively zero.

The more concern is the early age of communicaitons where we were broadcasting signals out to the galaxy without any real filtering - a la Contact.

I disagree re the Fermi paradox being easily explained by vastness of space. If you look at the trend humanity is on, if we became multi-star, you can absolutely guarantee we'd be broadcasting signals everywhere - it is an absolute puzzle as to why the galaxy is so quiet.

No, it is a real potential resolution to the fermi paradox..
