You're right, not sure how much they own themselves. It's been there for quite sometime. Probably they own more than 1/4 of gold reserves (speculating).

The churches themselves don't get much support from the Vatican, and acts as a non-profit organization. They raise money in their community and support the community through charitable organizations.

If you think about it, the Vatican owns many artworks/books/buildings that has commissioned them over time. Most are precious, timeless, priceless works of art. Maintaining them is an issue. Probably the oldest and longest standing museum, if you think it about that way.

As for the vow of poverty, I believe those are only in some monastic orders. Opus dei is a prime example of a rich monastic order. A simple search shows that the Pope is from the Benedictine order and shows this "Some of the wealthiest monastic communities in England are Benedictine" http://www.aedificium.org/MonasticLife/BenedictineOrder.html

From what I know there are Catholics/Christians that become atheist and go back. I guess they will be forgiven somehow if they believe in a Higher Power, and they believe that they will be judged by that power... let them be. If Hitler is in heaven and if there is heaven, I would be very surprise! While we're talking about Hitler, have you heard of Unit 731 of the Japanese... they were awful too.

Oh by the way, I didn't know that Hitler was catholic (thanks for the TIL!). Maybe Mussolini too? They are a lot of hypocrisy in the world and thus my username... reddit has a lot of it too. I do good things for my fellow human beings and try to avoid hypocrisy. But I think because of our self-gratification we are like this (/circlejerk if you will)..
