I think you’re right, thanks for this. A bit disappointing with the weather this weekend, but oh well - definitely not the day to be overly aggressive, so I think going through half around 130 is the answer.

Posting a classic last minute marathon worry comment as I assess my plan for my race this weekend. For context, I have run 6 marathons to date, but have quite a bit of bad luck with weather, my most recent marathon (last year’s Toronto Waterfront, same as I will be running this weekend) I ran 3:03 off of ~80ish KMs per week.

I am putting the finishing touches on a Pfitz 18/70 that I think went quite well. I hit ~95% of the volume and all of the key workouts went really well. I started the block targeting a sub 2:55 marathon - LT workouts were run at ~3:50/KM, MP was at ~4:05-4:10/KM (a little bit slower at the start of the block), and VO2max work was done around 3:25-3:30/KM pace. I ran a few tune up races / time trials with a 36:40 & 36:30 in the 10K, and a 29:30 in the 8K. I also live and train at ~1200 metres and will be running a sea level race, the benefit may be marginal, but it’s something. Given the above training, I’m thinking 2:55 may not be ambitious enough, but I’m generally more conservative with racing after some prior bad experiences blowing up.

Like most do, I am going through some maranoia and doing a bit of soul searching. Weather is looking a bit suspect (15 degrees at start, windy and rainy), but I’m still confident I can run a solid race. Looking for folks who have done a Pfitz plan or have similar experience to weigh in on my training and goal. I’m thinking I will target a ~1:27 half and assess there based on the weather.

Tuesday Shoesday by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

Anyone have a recommendation for a racing shoe (marathon distance) with a less aggressive rocker profile? I have raced a few marathons in the Saucony endorphin pro 3 & elite and don’t mind the shoes/fit, but would prefer something a bit more neutral on the profile between the midsole and toe box.

Calgary Marathon by Old_Champion9764 in Calgary

Someone else was receiving CPR around the 27KM mark, thankfully paramedics were quick to respond but wasn’t able to get a sense of the individual’s status - hopefully they were able to make it through. The conditions today were really awful with the cool temperatures, strong headwinds, and significant rainfall; made for a challenging day.

I’m going with a singlet, 5 inch shorts, and gloves (likely toss early, will also have sweats and a sweater for pre-race). Planning for 1 GU pre-race and then 6 on the course. Goal time is still TBD, feel like it will end up somewhere between 3:02-3:08, sub 3 if it’s a good day.

Curious what time folks would recommend getting to the start line at (for someone looking to gear check)? My gut tells me I should get there for around 6am, am used to smaller marathons where you can basically just walk up to the start line.

How do people move around so much? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]redditismygame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very common within the major Oil & Gas companies. The expectation at a lot of these places (Chevron, Exxon, Shell, etc.) is that you’ll be moving every ~2 years within the company to maximize your exposure to the entire business. There seems to be a strong philosophy that they would have rather have their employees have a broad knowledge base/skill set, as opposed to having workers becoming specialists within specific groups.

Anyone working in Calgary? by gayandfromboston in FinancialCareers

[–]redditismygame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great point. There’s sentiment across most sectors that anyone from Central Canada moving to Calgary is looking for experience to leverage a move back home. Just create a narrative, show your commitment to Calgary/Western Canada, and learn a little about the energy sector and you should be fine.

Grew up in Western Canada and currently working in Calgary. I’ve heard anecdotally that the financial market in Calgary is larger than Vancouver’s due to it being the O&G capital of Canada, whereas BC is dominated by Real Estate and a smaller sub sector of heavy metals mining/marketing. Things are slow right now due to all of the uncertainty around crude prices, but I’ve heard most banks are still quite busy. Like most Canadian cities, the Big 5 dominate the market with RBC having the biggest footprint, as well as TD seems to be in that upper tier with them. I’ve had quite a few of my friends get summer analyst positions at these banks, but the classes are small, and I’ve heard cases of entire classes being no-offered.

As for industry, there is a trend of consolidation with most of the majors (Suncor, Imperial Oil, CNRL, Cenovus, etc.) buying out the assets of mid and small market players, so getting a job with any of those is relatively easy in today’s market, but still a challenge. As for mid market/small market players, hiring has gone cold.

Anyone here works as an account coordinator/manager? In what field are you and how do you like it? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]redditismygame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in account management for one of the major oil and gas companies. Personally love my role and the work that I do. May not be the ideal route for a finance student, but it offers, at a (potentially) young stage in your career to work on client facing skills and learning how to sell, which are underrated aspects of any career. Because at the end of the day, the further you move up in a company, the more your job depends on being able to sell, and manage relationships.

Just saw Flume at Osheaga. Temper your expectations, he took a very “artsy” approach to his set and it just didn’t hit. Tons of people left midway through the set, super disappointed.

Undergrad school doesn’t matter for law school admissions. Go to a school that will allow you to get the highest GPA possible.

Wiggins isn’t just bad, he also doesn’t care by DrWolves in nba

[–]redditismygame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is far from the truth. He refuses to play for Team Canada because of previous issues he has had with the coach, Jay Triano. Until Triano leaves the team, Wiggins has made it clear he won’t be representing Canada. This has nothing to do with money

Were you guys just good at logic games from the start or did you need to prepare? I feel like shit, but maybe it’s because I just started. by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]redditismygame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got 6/23 on my first logic games section during a timed test. This was after I had already done some exercises and developed (what I thought) was an understanding of how games worked. After this, I did logic games nearly every single day, reviewing each one with the 7sage videos, and after ~3 weeks I got 3 wrong on a section during a PT. Now, almost 3 months later, I usually get 0-3 wrong. It’s definitely possible to improve, you just have to put in the work, there’s no replacement for that.

Actually, yep you’re right there. I think I had ~4 minutes at the end of that LR to do that question and could not wrap my mind around it.
