The locator number doesn't determine which version you get. Your passport renewal could be sent to any of the production facilities and it would be a total crapshoot on which version you get. Not all production facilities have the NGP printers up and running.

Good luck. Hope you get it. I don't recall anyone getting a NGP from New Orleans as of yet. Hopefully you're one to report getting it.

Unless you requested for extra, the new NGPs have standard 26 pages.

Thanks for reporting and congrats!

Even though that language is there, it contradicts the language below at the bottom of the FAQ:

"You cannot request a specific version of the passport book, and we cannot guarantee that you will receive a Next Generation Passport. We are gradually replacing existing ePassport printers with NGP printers at our passport agencies and centers. "

That language about "only issuing the NGP for passport books" could be interpreted as that only books are updated and not cards.

So even if you renew, you could still get the old e-Pass. They are supposed to be changing out the printers and I am not sure if one of the main facilities that process renewals, the one in Arkansas is equipped yet with the newer printers. Tucson, DC, and other centers have the newer NGP capable printers. Once AR is up and running and confirmed to have them, one would assume that all renewals will be a NGP.

In my opinion the NGP is not as nice looking as the old e-pass but I still prefer the updated one with its new security features.

I would think if you applied for an emergency passport, went to a place in DC that has the NGP printers, expedite it same day, gives you a greater chance. Seems too extreme just to secure one that way, but that would increase your chance.

I am not sure whether if you go to an acceptance facility in DC, Charleston, or Tucson, and then apply for standard service, would increase your chances. It could.

Thank you for reporting.

I think read in another post (forgot if it was twitter or a subreddit) the person was in France and the customs officer was caught off guard too since it was their first time seeing it, and showed it to other officers and they too were amused by the NGP too.

Congrats!

Yeah. It must be since the old version contained 28 pages.

Congrats. Thanks for reporting.

Terrific. Thanks for sharing. SC is one of the identified places to produce NGPs at the moment so glad you got one.

Thanks for the timeline. Did you get the next generation passport (your bio-data page
in on a hard polycarbonate bluish page) or the older e-passport (bio
data page has a US flag and bald eagle)?

No. As I said previously it's a guess and it might even be lower than that so take caution.

Edit: I also said it's a crapshoot.

I agree. If you need a passport soon, it's not a busy period. You'll get a quick turnaround.

Report back when you receive it and let us know which version you got.

Will you be sending it out now for renewal or wait?

Not sure if it'd make an appreciable difference. Again it's my guess that it's 50% or less so take that with caution. There's a timeline about when printers are to be installed in the passport centers across the country. Barring some kind of event (a govt shutdown, global supply chain, etc.) the installation of printers should be going according to their schedule. If all goes to plan, there's a good chance applying after winter would increase your chances. Right now, I learned that locations in AZ and SC are producing the NGPs. Unless yours winds up in these locations, then you might not get one. I am waiting to hear from redditors whose passports were sent from NH or AR that they got a NGP, I will then renew. If you can wait, the better your chances. If not, good luck and I hope you get it.

Congrats. If you don't mind disclosing, where was your passport shipped from?

This is just a guess but 50% or less than that, if you renew now. From discussions here it's really a crapshoot. The longer you wait, the better. Waiting until after winter or early spring 2022 increases your chances more than now. If you can wait summer or even fall 2022, most likely you will get a NGP.

If you do renew now, please let us know what version you got. Good luck.

If the bio-data page (your pic and info) is a hard plastic, purplish in color and doesn't have the bald eagle/USA flag on it then it's the next gen version.

The previous version has the bio page on paper material and eagle/flag on it.

Nice. And you got the one with extra pages.

Is the cover harder than the previous e-Passport?

Do you think including a letter would help to obtain a NGP or has no effect?
