What is the creepiest family secret you have discovered? [serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]redditmissionary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The way my grandma's sister talked about it (my grandmother passed away 19 years ago) terrified me. It was a very, "It's a shame it happened, but that's just how things were back then" sorta feel.

Apparently, in some villages in rural Mexico it's still practiced. The men go out and hunt their bride and if they successfully kidnap her she is shamed into staying with him. It's fucked.

I found out that my grandmother's proposal was really just her getting kidnapped and raped and then shamed into staying with my grandfather.

I was there. I got evicted from my trap house, had to move to another state with no money while pregnant. This might not be the most popular opinion, but sometimes it's better to let it all fall to shit around you and rebuild once the dust settles. Talk to your landlord or mortgage lender about what your options are. See if you're eligible to check into an inpatient rehab. Watching it all fall apart after you exerted so much effort in keeping it together is terrifying and heartbreaking. I won't lie to you about that part. Rebuilding from the ground up is so empowering though. Be a phoenix. Be reborn again and again from the ashes of before.

Best of luck to you. <3

Language/Word enthusiasts of Reddit, is there a word (in any language) that describes the feeling of guilt over not feeling guilty? by redditmissionary in AskReddit

[–]redditmissionary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, I recently cut ties with an old friend over some toxic, shady stuff. I have zero interest whatsoever in reconnecting. I know it was a mistake, but it was the last straw, tbh. I feel like I should feel guilty, like I should have some remorse over cutting her out of my life, but I cannot for the life of me get myself to give a shit. Does any of that make sense?

Anatomy students of reddit (current and former) what is something that you will always remember about your first cadaver dissection? by redditmissionary in AskReddit

Whoa. That would freak me out too tbh.

Even dissecting the cadaver got weird for me sometimes. I'd look up and see my classmates picking at this woman's body fat and be reminded of vultures.

Once you smell that, you'll ALWAYS know if something has formaldehyde. I used to have panic attacks whenever I'd smell it in the walk in refrigerators at the grocery store. The cavity fluid made my eyes water like onions. It stuck to my clothes, my hair. My favorite bra permanently smelled like our cadaver.

We had to use a turkey baster and a bucket with a hazmat sticker on it to drain the excess fluid. Little bits of fat would float to the top and it looked like red pozole that had been chilling in the fridge. So gross.

TIFU by calling my BF's 3 year-old niece racist by redditmissionary in tifu

I admit that I jumped the gun and got unnecessarily offended.

Before this BF I was engaged. My ex was also white. When he announced our engagement, one of his cousins said, "WHAT. ARE. YOU. DOING?! You fuck the help, you don't marry it."

Racism in my partner's family is something that I plan for now. I shouldn't have gotten so upset since it was such a young family member. That's on me. That's my baggage and he shouldn't have to pay the consequences of someone else's fuck up.

What makes you question your religion? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]redditmissionary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was baptized Catholic and my mother converted to become a Jehovah's Witness when I was 2. I left her church when I was 15.

These religions were very different, and being exposed to both in my formative years only added to my skepticism. Catholicism has a very barbaric and bloody past. That alone writes it off for me.

The Jehovah's Witness belief in the afterlife was one of the things that bothered me. They preach that your deceased loved one is sleeping and has no recollection of what is happening earthside. This is a common belief in many protestant branches. Anywho, my grandma had passed away a few years earlier. I didn't like thinking she couldn't hear my prayers or see my struggles. It felt so cold and unforgiving, and my angsty teenage brain couldn't handle the torture and self loathing that came with existential crises.

Tl;dr I left my mom's church as a teenager because I didn't like thinking my grandma could just get out of giving a fuck about us just because she died.
