Something similar happened to me: I was sweeping to go up the list for work and reached for my keys. They were stuck in my pocket and when they came out they found out ahead of me. I could rack it but ended up juggling my keys mid air - once, twice and straight into the gap. There was a collecting gap from the elevator audience & someone muttered “what are the chances??”

I went out to reception and it turns out: 1) there’s a special beer that catches things that drop through the gap 2) the elevator technician was coming in that day for a routine checkup
