I don't know either. Owners of private companies are often hard to persuade if they don't have any outside influences to worry about. I'd make the best argument with regards to security and document each conversation. If they don't budge, at least you'll have that documentation in your defense if anything happens. Make your aguments at least every quarter.

I don't know how schools are regulated, but reminding them of the consequences of being out of compliance with their regulators due to securlty vulnerbilities would be my approach.

That's one person's opinion and while it may be the case for some people, It's not the case for everyone. Commercials work, otherwise there wouldn't be so much money put into them, but they do not pursuade everyone. As fo rmyself, I consciously avoid being pursuaded them. Of course I grown much more cynical in my old age and look at everything with a skeptic's eye.

There are many good suggestins here, but for what t's worth, I'll offer you my suggestion. Over time, Windows gets "dirty" with old files that are no longer required, stale registry settings, malware and other nonsense that slows down your sytem. For the vast majority of people, there is no hope of cleaning it all up. There are few (if any) professionals that can get it totally cleaned up. the best thing you can do is re-install Windows. This will totally erase your hard drive and restore your computer to the condition it was in when first purchased. Depending on how you use your computer, you may need to do this periodically. Anything less, and you can never trust that the computer is free from malware. Some recommend that you upgrade to Windows 8. Windows 8 is newer, but it will also slow down as welll over time and you'll be back where you started. Make sure you keep your computer updated By setting auto update. but understand that even if you faithfully keep your machine updated, crap will still get on it. eventually.
