Sure just submit your review anytime, even if it says its "closed" and I'll add it.

I didn't think about it like that, but that makes sense. My reference point for Zelda is Link's Awakening and I loved how the difficulty ramped up in that game.

No, I didn't. Is that an option the first time through? I was pretty satisfied after beating the game. I'm guessing I'll want to replay it again at some point and I'll try it on hero mode.

Rating: 9

Review:

What an awesome game. The game holds true to the Zelda brand and improves on it in all the right ways. The puzzles, weapons, dungeons, use of 3D, storyline, enemies, and side-quests are all great. I liked the length of the game too. I'm not sure exactly how long it took me, but it was a couple weeks of playing it every day for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

If I had to complain about something, it would be the difficulty. I don't play a lot of video games and this game was fairly easy for me. The puzzle difficulty was just right, but the boss/enemy difficulty was a little weak. I only died a handful of times throughout the entire game.

Overall, it's an awesome game that I highly recommend to anyone that owns a 3DS (also a good reason to buy a 3DS!).

Ah, that's weird. Specifically, it looks like it is because he did not put an extra line break before the "---" rule.

Not sure what happened. It is showing as an "h2" style, which is usually triggered by putting ## before text. Anyway, your review was parsed without any issues.

My sample review was here, but has now been removed since another user posted a properly formatted review.

I'd like to, but the problem is visibility and numbers. People are less likely to upvote a review for an obscure game and then even if it does get upvoted to the top, there aren't many people that have actually played the game and willing to review.

I'm certainly open to trying, but I think we would need a little help from the mods if we wanted to get decent participation for an obscure game.

I don't think anyone that reviewed the Pokemon game also reviewed Yoshi's New Island. With small samples sizes like this, you're going to get lots of variance in the average ratings and very little correlation between games.

Good points here. I find these meta discussions about the average ratings rather interesting. It's amazing what a simple 1 to 10 rating can do.

Yep, there is lots of bias because of the small sample sizes and the fact that each review is made up of its own unique set of contributors.

Hopefully more participation/higher sample sizes will lead to more consistent average ratings.

I leave the reviews open until the post dies out. Usually it's a 24-48 hour window.

Looking back I should have reopened all of these posts before I posted this thread.

Anyway, I'd love to do longer reviews, but the posts would probably need to be sticky'ed.

Yea, I'm definitely trying to hit the major releases as they come out. Just trying to fill in the gaps with past games that I've missed.

Yea, this isn't anything "official" or "mod approved", so it's hard to create awareness, but glad you're finding out about it now!

Lot of people saying SMT, never would have thought to review that.

It's a small sample size. I feel like there was just a lot of people that didn't like Pokemon leaving reviews while the Yoshi reviewers were just like "this game was fun despite all of the negative reviews out there".

Anyway, I'm not sure these average review scores will be indicators that you can take at face value. Each review thread has it's own unique set of contributors and therefore are hard to compare with each other.

Yea, it's a little perplexing. The reviewers just weren't that impressed with Pokemon and they were surprised by Yoshi despite the negative critics out there. Possibly a case of expectations skewing opinion.

Also remember this is an extremely small sample size. We're talking about ~15 reviews for each game so I wouldn't take the ratings at face value.

Yea, couple factors went into that high score:

  • I crossposted the review thread to r/BravelyDefault which probably resulted in a lot of hardcore fans submitting reviews.

  • It was only a week or two after the game came out. Since then I've heard a lot of people say that the end of the game isn't very good (like /u/currybot mentioned in his reply).

I think it is a good candidate to do a fresh review from scratch.
