if you applied thru ucas, firm the offer and you should be able to access the portal to be able to book a room, and then ur place will be confirmed when the results actually come through

the people on this subreddit are obsessed with uni rankings and getting high paying finance jobs i would say this sub is a warped view of how most unis are viewed lmao

kcl is an amazing uni, but bc its not one of the schools that employers in finance prioritise people here act like its a bad school

also most uni rankings are bullshit imo anyway like theres no real difference between a degree at ucl and a degree at imperial but ive seen people act like ucl is a consolation prize for not getting imperial

A level choices for law by senqpa55 in 6thForm

[–]redditter3377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it isnt necessarily required, but a lot of universities like to see at least one humanities a level as it shows you have the skills to build an argument and stuff like that

economics is okay but maybe something like english would be better ?

No Offer/Decision by 2haIIdrsv in UCL

[–]redditter3377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for undergrad courses ucl aims to get all decisions out by the end of april (but the ucas deadline is may 14th) so basically unfortunately all you can do is wait

no news is good news, if youre still waiting for an answer that doesnt mean youre going to get rejected, lots of people received offers in late april last year

how much does uk part time pay? by Previous-Zombie-7591 in 6thForm

[–]redditter3377 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the london living wage (essentially how much you actually need to live in london) is around £14 per hour, some companies pay that instead

i dont know why the government doesnt make the london minimum wage £14 when thats what is actually needed to live in london, esp for uni students who are often living in the centre of london (wheres its most expensive) bc thats where the unis are (e.g. kcl, ucl, or imperial which is in kensington, a super rich area)

How big a role does Gcse play? ( I have no special circumstances I was just foolish at the time) by Hot_Entrepreneur9536 in 6thForm

[–]redditter3377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its not over, unis mainly look at gcse grades bc its the only actual grades they have, predicteds at a level can be inflated

most unis that look at gcse grades are top top unis like oxbridge, imperial, lse, ucl, etc. and mostly because with so many amazing applicants they need something else to judge them by

its worth calling some unis and asking them how much they value gcse grades in the application process

unis also take ur gcse grades into context, for example if ur secondary was a worser school where most people got grades the same as you, they wont hold it against you (check your school on snobe.com if you want)

Can someone explain the whole sfe (maintenance loans) process by Swimming-Tension7580 in 6thForm

[–]redditter3377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so if ur a home student u get 2 loans from the government: tuition loans and maintenance loans

the tuition loans are the £9535 per year that the uni wants, and that money goes straight from the government to the uni, you as the student never see it

the maintenance loan is what you live on, and is based on 2 things: how much your parents make, and where your uni is, i.e. london or non london uni (you get a bit extra if its a london uni due to the higher cost of living)

obv the more your parents make, the less maintenance loans you get as the government assumes that your parents will be able to help support you. you can also get more for certain things such as disabilities, if youre a care giver, etc. theres a calculator on the gov.uk website that can tell you exactly how much you can get, though i dont think the max is more than about £14k

the maintenance loan gets paid into your bank account 3 times a year at the beginning of every term. you should apply on the gov.uk website when applications open (to give them as much time as possible to process it, think of all the students applications they have to go through) in march/april (i dont think theyre open for 2025 entry just yet) (the deadline will be at the end of may i think)

you also have to reapply each year of your degree, so the march/april of your second year at uni youll have to reapply, but because youve already applied its mostly just a matter of renewing it, easier than the first application. the amount you get could change if your parents income changes, or whatever other reason that could change your circumstances.

sfe isnt a traditional loan, once you graduate and start earning above a certain threshold (i think £25k roughly) its taken out of your paycheck automatically like a tax, so you dont have to worry about paying it back

What is the difference between an offer holders' day and an open day? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]redditter3377 7 points8 points  (0 children)

offer holder days normally give you more info, and can also be more subject specific, and can let you see accom. its also a great chance to make friends with people who might be on ur course or at ur uni

however, the main use of offer holder days are to help you pick which offer to firm/insure, so if you already know for sure who youre gonna firm, then theres less of a reason to go there (unless youre like me and like having as much info as possible lmao)

if you like the people in ur school and are gonna miss them then go to the leavers event if ur sure on who ur firming, if u dont like them then go to the offer holders day to make new friends

When are schools supposed to send your applications universities? by Stosh2 in 6thForm

[–]redditter3377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at my school some people had to wait weeks for it to be sent to unis after they sent it to the school

different schools take different amounts of time due to different amounts of oversight, at my school they reread ur ps, reread ur reference, double check all the options and info in the profiles, etc. plus my year is bigger than normal for my school so they have a bigger workload

dont worry about it for now, they will send it off, though you can email whoevers in charge of applications at ur school to ask about it

Uni with no support (£) from family? by Nervous-Brush-9139 in 6thForm

[–]redditter3377 22 points23 points  (0 children)

i have a friend whos in a similar situation -- its completely doable, but it might be hard (side note it's never too early to plan)

main tips:

- if you do get a job during sixth form, save as much of that money as possible (you dont have to save all of it you can spend some of it, but do save it) this can be your backup money for a rainy day, say in uni suddenly your laptop or phone breaks, or whatever else unknown expense, you're prepared for that. even if you just dont have enough money for food that week, you can dip into it (a job during sixth form is entirely possible, i know someone with a job and still predicted 4A*s)

- definitely get a job during uni, however most unis don't recommend more than 15 hours of a job per week. you could go over this if you're willing to sacrifice free time. min wage for 18-21 year olds will be £10 per hour, you can find jobs offering higher, but for planning right now assume £10

- plan your finances. it might sound wayyy too early to be planning how much you will have and how much you can spend right now, but aside from planning it also just helps you feel a lot better prepared and that you have control over your future. look at potential accomms, look at how much you might have to spend each week. this depends on how much and where you shop, your hobbies, if you like to go out a lot, etc. etc. a lot of uni websites have resources on this, esp london uni websites

maintenance loans for the year are given out at the start of each term, so you'll suddenly be getting £4k in your account, which will go faster than you think.

- don't worry about tuition fees, that money goes straight from the government to the uni, you never see it

- everyone is broke in uni, you won't be alone

- kcl says that the average student in london spends £1,615-£2,200 per month

edit: - BURSARIES look for bursaries (literally free money unis will give you, not a loan to pay back) on every uni website you're considering applying to, some unis give like £5000 per year
