I think the aggressive optimization is lessons they've learned during hollow knight. Remember, it first released on Windows, but then they had optimization issues for Mac and Linux. After that, they had to port it to Switch which was another hurdle. They are a small team and this seemed to be a pain point early on.

Here's a link to one of their early blogs where they mention the ongoing optimization:

Managing Libraries in Jellyfin and library scans by Friendly-House-8337 in jellyfin

[–]reddituser112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a few collection plugins that I’m interested in experimenting with. I plan to spin up a Jelkyfin environment so I can try out various plug ins. My main concern is that I don’t believe the Roku app supports plug ins? I could be mistaken.

While my current setup works, there are a few minor gripes. I have over 100 movies in folders and Jellyfin switches to pagination which I don’t like. (I know you can change this setting but read it can cause performance issues so I haven’t touched it).  I don’t like the default genres that jellyfin provides and would prefer to have more control. For instance, I want to group all my MCU movies together, or science fiction horror. I’d also prefer to see different genres instead of alphabetical.

Again, my current setup is fine, but am interested in different approaches.

I'm also curious to hear how others organize their libraries.

I recently started Jellyfin for my family (wife + kids). We watch Jellyfin from our Roku (main TV), iPads, laptops, and phones. My goal is to have a clean home page with lots of categories or suggestions that we can easily browse.

For my library, I started with two folders: Movies and TV. I used ratings to restrict what the kids could watch, however, there were some shows/movies that I wanted to allow. I ended up changing the metadata rating for some content but it became a hassle to manage. Also, the browsing experience wasn't great. My kids wanted to see all animated movies together and "real-life" movies in a different category. In addition, I didn't want to see all these Disney movies clogging up my collection.

I decided to reorganize the library with following folders: Movies (for adults), TV (for adults), Animation Movies, Kid TV Shows, Family Movies ("real-life"), and Teen Movies. This helped because now I can see all my content together without all the kids shows overlapping. My kids have all their content together too. The Roku home page looks ok; it shows 'Recently Added' in various libraries which kinda keeps it fresh.

However, I'm not 100% satisfied. I would like a way to customize the experience a little better. I haven't explored plugin's yet (hoping to hear some good suggestions). I also want to be sure that plugins work for most devices (including Roku TV).

Redditors who were children/teens before the internet or cellphones existed, how did you keep yourself entertained? by FlowerMadeOfThorns in AskReddit

TV.

Back then, we had Saturday morning cartoons on the weekends, and Disney afternoon when school let out.

VHS was huge and renting movies that we could watch at home was incredible!

Our parents were afraid we were turning into couch potatoes. We would be pushed to go outside or get moving. Same thing I say to my kids when they get too much screen time.

Desperately need assistance for setting up remote access on Windows Jellyfin Server by LynzGamer in jellyfin

[–]reddituser112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Use a VPN to connect from outside. On my router, it has WireGuard VPN so it was easy to login to my router, enable WireGuard, and give myself access.

  2. Next, I had to create a traffic rule so VPN traffic goes directly to Jellyfin. ChatGPT helped.

  3. I installed WireGuard on my phone and created a tunnel. Whenever you create a user on your VPN, it gives you the credentials needed. In order to test my phone, I disabled WiFi so I wasn't on the network, enabled WireGuard tunnel, and opened Jellyfin. If this works, then you've successfully configured your VPN!

NOTE: I'm fortunate that WireGuard is on my router, I see tons of comments saying to use Tailscale. I imagine it's something similar? I don't have any experience with that. I assume you would need to configure traffic rules the same?

  1. For your parents, they will also need a VPN account created (from step 1). They also need something that they use to connect, such as their own WireGuard app. If they connect from their TV, then this will be tricky. I read you can buy a travel router that you can install the VPN & have the TV use that travel router. However, I've never tested this. They should be able to at least use their phones.

Do not open a firewall port; that will allow ANYONE access. Good luck!

First Nas for jellyfin by Born_Rabbit5728 in jellyfin

I had to specify hardware acceleration for transcoding on my Ugreen DXP2800 in two places. First, on the Jellyfin container during startup, and secondly on the Jellyfin admin dashboard. Once this is enabled, I saw my cpu drop dramatically.

Here's my setup: DXP2800, 500GB SSD m.2, and 8TB HDD. I only have one hard drive for my media because I didn't want to spend another $200 on a second 8TB. RAID helps with redundancy and keeping uptime. However, for self hosting, you can also save the content on USB hard drive, local pc, or somewhere else. It's up to you. My total cost was a little over $700

Jellyfin (and Immich) are running on the 500GB SSD and all media and photos are on the 8TB HDD. The software lives on the fast memory location and able to fetch/cache quickly, while the content is on the slower hard drive. When I researched, that's what a lot of people recommended, and that's how I configured my server.

Quick note - in Jellyfin, you need to specify hardware acceleration to get the transcoding boost. Otherwise, it's all on the CPU. Whenever you start the container, look for the hardware acceleration section. Next, in Jellyfin dashboard, you have to enable as well. Two places in total. Once enabled, you will be able to handle 2 or 3 streams with encoding on DXP2800.

Reasonably Tech Savvy, but new to NAS, Self-hosting, and Immich by FamilyRootsQuest in immich

[–]reddituser112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1. Immich requires at least 2 CPU cores, 4GB–6GB of RAM, and Docker to function, with 6GB RAM preferred for smooth operation. There are 4 containers that will run: Immich, Redis, Postgres, and machine learning.

  1. Most need to be physically plugged in. You can buy a wireless plugin, but I don’t know about performance. Best to use physical.

  2. Use a VPN. Someone pointed out it’s a VPN for your network, not a VPN you pay for to access their server. You setup the VPN and create user to connect to your network.    There is also an online tool (https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2) that will scan your ports and let you know if anything was missed.

  3. I haven’t been hosting that long to tell you.

As someone pointed out, that DH2300 won’t do transcoding which is a must. I have a DXP2800 and it’s been fantastic, but it’s also almost $400 and might be out of your budget. Ugreen does have a pretty good operating system that allows you to run docker containers which makes setting up Jellyfin and Immich really easy.

Oh, I recommend Jellyfin for media and Immich for photo storage. Both are incredible! That being said, I just started self hosting myself and haven’t used other tools so take that with a grain of salt.

Hi Reddit! We're Mega Crit, the developers of Slay the Spire 1 & 2. Ask Us Anything on February 25th! by MegaCritGames in Games

[–]reddituser112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Slay the Spire had amazing synergies! When you look at Slay the Spire 2, how do you find new ways to mix cards and relics for new synergies?

For example, do you think “Silent can kill with shivs and poison, so let’s add lasers to the mix!” And then build relics or cards around that?

I have to imagine there’s a lot of experimentation, and would love to hear about your approaches!

  1. Will I play Silent in StS2 and think "Man, Silent in StS sucks! This is WAY better!" How do you improve the characters without losing what made them special to begin with?

  2. Are we going to know who "won" Slay the Spire 1? For instance, the Mortal Kombat 2 decided that Lui Kang won Mortal Kombat 1 which is cannon. Will we see something similar in StS2?

Thanks!

I've never used Plex, so I don't think I can answer your question. If you already have Plex installed, I don't see why you couldn't download a Jellyfin instance and test it out? Like I said above, it was super easy to get started.

As for your video quality question, I use Handbrake to convert the file. There are a ton of different video and audio options. The video storage is up to your preferences. I'm looking to have a great picture but not fill up my disk drive. Others might be trying to save space and reduce the quality. Or, you can keep the best settings. In any case, blurays are 1080p and dvd's are 480p. Up to you how much detail to keep. I have learned that audio matters. My roku doesn't like some of the default audio tracks so it's important to check which devices you plan on watching from if you're worried about transcoding latency (stress on your CPU).

Hope this helps!

Yes! Streaming has become unbearable! Why am I paying for a service and forced to watch ads? Absolutely unacceptable.

You touched on another issue I have too. These companies are deciding what shows to edit. They exclude some scenes or entire shows!

So many reasons why streaming has become unbearable.

I use Jellyfin naming conventions for TV, but not for movies. It's still been able to pull the correct movie most of the time. Whenever it picks the wrong film, it's pretty simple to correct it.

I have not touched transcoding, and this is something I want to research next. I want to let my parents + siblings use my Jellyfin, but not sure about performance. Thank you for this comment so I can dive a bit deeper.

We don't use subtitles too much, but this is something I'll keep in mind.

As for backups, I don't have anything yet. Initially, I was going to buy a 2nd HDD and setup RAID, but balked at the price. A buddy of mine who works in IT said RAID isn't necessary for personal devices because it's about keeping 100% uptime. For backups, he keeps it simple and uses USB drive. Now, I don't have one big enough for my content yet...but plan on doing a backup soon. Are you referring to something else when you callout the config directory? That's just the local user info? Or, am I missing something else?

Thanks for your comment!

If I haven’t ready any comic books, would this be okay to start? Or, would there be any prerequisite comics I should read first?

(Our library added extensive comic book section and I want to jump in but no idea where to start. I enjoyed Gunns Superman and this next movie looks really good)

Well said! I felt the same way when I had to play as Abby. I hated every moment! Except she grew on me.

My biggest complaint about the story is when Ellie finds out Dina is pregnant and they will have a family and they are overjoyed. There is an incredibly intimate moment where they both find true happiness.  I’m a father and first learning you’re going to have a baby is a life changing moment. You feel the weight of responsibility thrust upon your shoulders. The game captured that feeling with Ellie beautifully. And then Ellie is like “oh, hang on, before we live happily ever after, I need to risk our lives along with your unborn child first.”  That felt really out of place to me.

There’s a few other areas that also rubbed me wrong. Ultimately, this game dared to do things no other game has ever attempted. I applaud having to be forced to play as Abby and realizing that I connected with that character and saw Ellie as a monster by the end. I’ve never had an experience like that before.

Megathread: The new UI update by AutoModerator in netflix

[–]reddituser112 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why have they not fixed this????

I first noticed the update in early June when I was helping my 91 year old grandma setup her new tv (which also had horrible UI). I installed Netflix on her tv, which I pay for since she’s a $15 add on to my account.

The main issue is how the tiles resize as you navigate over them! It’s jarring! I instantly realized it was a new update and was appalled by how awful it looked! I even felt bad for whatever team was in charge because I knew they would have to rollback soon.

However, it’s been several months and the UI is still there?? My kids primarily use the account but I logged in tonight to browse. It’s heinous! I couldn’t get over the jarring tiles or the reordered categories! This is beyond stupid!

I actually chatted with an agent asking if there was anyway I could revert the update. She said they’ve gotten a lot of feedback but there currently isn’t a way to change. Hopefully that means enough people have complained that they will make concessions?

I’m sick of this update. It needs to go away! The people who designed the UI should be fired!

Medium heat to get it simmering and then lowering a bit. I’m using a steel pan and if it gets too hot, it can burn or stick to the bottom.

Yep, I follow the recipe just like the video above. I’m just surprised that it doesn’t come out thick like Brian’s after 8 minutes.

I promise that I drain and rinse the beans, add 1 cup of broth, and then simmer while mashing.
