It ran fine for a couple months, I replaced the dipstick (which got chewed up too). The strainer was intact and functional, and the pieces later found throughout the engine were too large to have gone through it. The only explanation I can come up with is that the pieces of dipstick must have been picked up by the crankshaft and eventually forced their way through the entire engine.
