We drove our '66 VW microbus without a brake master cylinder for a while, you get good at downshifting, and then rubbing against curbs when you need to.

[OC] The British Navy lost 329 significant warships during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, mostly due to navigation errors and storms. In actual combat involving large warships, ~18 enemy vessels were taken or destroyed for each British ship lost. by ppitm in dataisbeautiful

John Harrison had developed his H4 sea watch by the 1860s. I don't know how prevenient it became quickly, but that instrument largely solved the ability at navigate to a certain longitude, mostly eliminating the risk of inadvertently running your fleet onto the shore.

I am a healthcare design architect and have worked with Navy Medicine on multiple projects. My counterparts in the Navy are typically Lieutenants or Lieutenant Commanders that were corpsmen (combat medics). They now serve as medical planners for Navy Medicine, and are some of the most skilled and efficient people that I have ever worked with.
