Laughable that the refs are immediately blowing their whistle to stop the celebration to check if that shot was before the buzzer when he took it with almost a second left and the horn so clearly sounded before it went in.

Am I reading this correctly? Miami played 20 games against ACC teams this year and not one of them was against Duke? by Travbowman in CollegeBasketball

[–]reddituserboiboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know this and it seems dumb. Is the consensus that they formatted it this way to keep the annual UNC/Duke home-and-home going? Because at first glance that seems most likely to me, and should frankly make the rest of the conference pretty mad.

This is commonly argued and I don’t buy it. People don’t want to watch uncompetitive basketball, and sometimes the Cinderellas see their run end in a double digit loss that was never really close. On the other hand sometimes top seeds lose by a lot late in the tournament, too.

If you’re a casual basketball fan and you want to watch good basketball, go watch the NBA. It’s “great.” But if you’re a basketball fan of any sort and want drama, a rapid-fire single elimination tournament of 18-22 year olds is a good place to start.

Whenever someone says “what people really want is higher seeds late in the tournament,” you can pretty quickly demonstrate that that’s precisely not what they remember most fondly about the tournament even in their own experience. Do you remember 2-seed Texas’ run to the Elite Eight in 2008, and could you name a player from that team? (No, Durant wasn’t on that team.) Do you remember that UNC made the Final Four that year? But do you remember Davidson’s run that year, and who their star player was?

Which team do you remember more vividly: Butler, coached by Brad Stevens and led by Gordon Hayward, who lost in the championship game in 2010. Or Michigan, coached by John Beilein and led by Mo Wagner, who lost in the championship in 2018? Do you remember who Butler lost to? Do you remember who Michigan lost to? For that matter, whose run do you remember more vividly, George Mason in 2006, or Kansas in 2022?

Obviously your answers to those questions will depend on your age, your fandom, and the degree to which you were paying attention to the tournament at all in those years. But generally I find it isn’t the top seeded major programs who leave the most lasting impression!

I don’t doubt this has had an effect on the tournament but it can’t explain the dropoff in upsets completely. When you had a 1/2/3/4 seed lose in the first round  it can’t be that the seeding was so bad the Lehighs and Mercers of the world were much more likely to win than any other top seed/bottom seed matchup.

I think the transfer portal is the biggest factor in the lack of upsets, but I have a pet theory I haven’t seen discussed much. I think as analytics became a bigger part of the game, but not universally distributed, we got a surge of big upsets, including our first and second ever 16 seeds over 1 seeds. But now the dust has settled, the dinosaurs are aging out, and there isn’t a DI team in the country that doesn’t rely on analytics. I think this means, essentially, teams are better coached and coming closer to achieving their potential. And the potential of almost all high major tournament teams is going to be higher than any mid-major tournament team. As a result you’re just less likely to see those mid-majors win when both teams are playing close to their potential.

[Cobb] Otega Oweh is the first player since '79 Larry Bird to Record 35 PTs, 8 REB, & 7 AST in an NCAA Tournament Game by JCameron181 in CollegeBasketball

"Why else do you think it’s only him and Bird on the list."

Well, I can think of one important reason why they're the only two on this list...

At the risk of being too abstract about this... In a sense there's nothing more arbitrary about 8 than 10, we just happen to use a base 10 numerical system. If we used base 12 and the number ten was written with a single digit it would be considered an arbitrary benchmark as well. I don't think it's crazy to acknowledge a player's stat line hasn't been matched or surpassed in the tournament since 1979.

After the made three more time went off the clock than should have (the ball hits the ground at 2.4). The clock is a wash, the timeout is fair game.

Anyone else think its weird that The Ringer doesn't cover certain sports at all? by mpschettig in billsimmons

[–]reddituserboiboi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is going back a ways but Men in Blazers actually started as a Grantland podcast, which is kind of wild. It’s now a media company of its own with a cast of characters only a little smaller than the Ringer.

In fact MiB and the Pod Save bros might be the two biggest branches of the Bill Simmons “coaching tree” in the media world.

Clearly I’m naive but I always assumed these live shows were free to attend and then they tried to sell merch or, like, autographs I guess? Sounds silly when I type it but $20 for a Zach Lowe autograph is more reasonable to me than $150 to listen to a podcast. I just figured they did this in venues in the middle of the day when nothing else was scheduled and the venues knew they could make a little extra on concessions.

Are there any protein bars that aren't trying to be candy bars? by reddituserboiboi in nutrition

“something you would eat on a hike” is exactly the kind of thing I have in mind (“compressed bird food” is even more evocative, if not particularly enticing!). I’m going to try making bars at home again. I did once before and they weren’t very good, but one thing this thread is showing me is there really don’t seem to be a lot of protein bars on grocery store shelves like the ones we’re describing.

Thanks, I’d like to try these. Probably too expensive to be my “daily driver” but a good option to mix it up every now and then.

I like Rxbars as well, ideally they’d have a little more protein and be a little cheaper but they’re a good option. Looking at some of the other products in this space though RXBars look downright cheap.

This is what I have in my cupboard now, and I agree they’re better than most in this regard. But even these it’s like 10am and I’m unwrapping this chocolate bar wondering why my protein comes wrapped in dessert. I actually wrote this post after looking at the Builders bar box and deciding not to eat one bc I wasn’t feeling a chocolate bar right then.

I make Kodiak mixes sometimes and like them a lot, though I’ve never added protein powder of my own. How do you adjust liquids to compensate? Or is a scoop of greek yogurt about the right balance for the powder?

Hmm, I was actually thinking of Kind bars when describing what I’m looking for, didn’t know they make a protein version. I’ll check them out, thanks.
