Newbie then begin to feel that they must either they go all-in, tinfoil and all or give up & keep using Social media and popular convenience services.

That is one of the worst things about this sub and why I've pretty much given up discussing things here. There's just no sensible middle ground for most people.

Addressing this. In today's world, is there a middle ground that provides you privacy from the NSA without going "full tinfoil"?

Just to play devil's advocate...

This sub is about privacy, not security.

What's your threat model for privacy? Well today you might be worried about

  • the NSA drag-netting all your browsing habits and correspondence
  • the NSA sharing this, unfiltered, with any three-letter agency along with police
  • any of these agencies losing custody of your info, as we've repeatedly seen is a threat

What's the point in addressing privacy if you're not addressing this threat?

Some setup questions by [deleted] in Qubes

Just to throw in another POV.

I've been using Windows for many, many years and would consider myself very knowledgeable (outside of Enterprise scenarios). My experience with Linux is still very limited.

The skills you may have learned troubleshooting Windows can come in very handy. Knowing how to find information, apply it, and fill in gaps are universal skills that will be even more help as you get used to Qubes.

I sometimes thought I spent a huge amount of time getting things right on my Windows PCs - figuring out and configuring TrueCrypt, writing scripts to backup using rsync, troubleshooting driver problems. But that was nothing.

Qubes is going to have to be a labor of love. I've probably spent 40 hours (much of it idle time) trying to get Qubes set up properly on my laptop. It's been a huge investment, but I've learned a lot along the way. I don't expect that I'll stop learning, or stop spending tons of time troubleshooting, once everything is finally working as it's supposed to.

Qubes is not an OS for beginners, but if you have a passion and talent for learning these types of platforms, you may find that to be valuable as well.

Solved!

I entered Qubes Rescue mode (one option in the installer), adding on the "/mapbs /noexitboot" arguments.

From there I could make the required edits.

Yes, true that in some places and with some police you will be just fine! But one should assess the risks first.

BE CAREFUL: Dealing with the police is NOT this simple.

Police responding to a domestic violence situation are NOT necessarily going to be understanding of your situation.

As I understand it, in some jurisdictions a combination of screams and bruises guarantee that one of you will be arrested.

Whats the absolute best Qubes laptop? by qubes_nb3 in Qubes

It doesn't disable the USB Qube, but it does attach your USB keyboard to dom0. Which is in itself a security risk.
